Espn, complete trash

alright so dont know if this has been posted earlier, but espn is horrible. recently there was their annual year in review segment, and a part of that segment is a "in memoriam" for all those sports personalities that had passed away in the past year. now hockey coverage on espn was always lacking, with a mediocre goal on top ten every now and then, or a highlight or two from the previous nights ten games, and to my understanding it had something to do with rights obtained. however, during that "in memoriam" segment, not a single hockey player was named, nor a mention of the Lokomotiv hockey squad (containing ex nhl'rs) lost in the flight crash. this is embarrassing and quite frankly has ruined any little respect for espn that i have left. the personalities covering hockey are quite knowledgeable and i enjoy reading their articles from time to time on espn.com, but their talents would best be served on a another network (nbc sports perhaps?) where the sport can receive more recognition.

I can understand your anger but after looking at the list of who they did pay tribute to I don't really see any reason why any of those hockey players should be included, all of those people are way bigger names than the hockey guys and that plane crash was in another continent.

true, but when you present yourself as being a global flagship sports network that represents all sports, you'd think they could take the time to make 1 mention of the fact that an entire team died. It's not like it was 1 obscure russian player, it's an entire team.

no and none of my sports-obsessed friends have either. Im not saying what happened isn't as sad as the others but hockey just isn't that important in the US.

ok I'll admit that the team argument has legs, but Im still not outraged by their decision. again i feel like I should explain that I stil recognize it as a huge tragedy so i don't look crazy insensitive here

nah i'm not outraged either since it's not the us, but it still seems like a pretty big omission when literally all the material for the network is sports.


I'm half convinced it's no longer the same person behind this username because I've found myself agreeing with you more than once in the last 2 weeks. I don't believe that had ever happened before.

exactly. ESPN barely covers soccer either. its a US sports network in all reality.

none of them were soccer players or a lot of other sports athletes either.  Almost all of them were baseball and football, the two biggest sports in the United States with the exception of Joe Frazier, who is a very well-known boxer and Dan Wheldon, the nascar driver that died in a race this year.  It was a very small list of important sports figures, but i do agree that the entire hockey team should be recognized.

They air EPL games some mornings about one game a week from MLS but yeah, they could cover it a lot more.

i've really started disliking espn lately and their coverage of certain crimes. i cant wait for nbc sports to come out so it can provide a differing viewpoint and better reporting

Basketballs a fuckin pussy sport and like B-WASS said soccer is the most played and watched sport in the world...at least hockey can have a normal 82 game season and not complain about about their money. Crosby makes 8 million a year while Kobe makes 21 million. I may not like some sports that much but I don't hate any of them and if hockey is for girls them why does basketball have the wnba

Right because players have stopped caring about money in the past 5 years...

All athletes in all sports all want more money. Same with owners. Lets not pretend that somehow the NHL has become so much more mature since their lockout.

but they show what they want and cover what they want. lots of americans have no clue about the motogp, so they dont mention him. and they obviously arent too involved in hockey coverage.

its a business and they do what they think is necessary. if its wrong, they will pay the price in form of another network making more money.

I may be way off but didn't the NHL refuse to sell the some of the rights to any of the videos regarding the plane crash and and the russian team because of some russian law or something? So espn tried but they weren't able or allowed to show or talk about them.

No, but it is refreshing to see pro athletes NOT flop on the ground when someone brushes up against them as in the NBA- or constant showboating, crybaby action and douchebaggery as with the NFL, and don't get me started on the borefest that MLB is nowadays.  It's a no-nonsense sport that's faster paced than anything else out there and you'd be hard pressed to find a more physical professional sport, and fuck you ahead of time soccer kids for whatever stupid shit it is you're thinking of posting about soccer being hard hahahaha.           

You have to admit, hockey players put their bodies through more than anyone else for less money than any other pro sport.  The opposite end of the spectrum would probably be MLB, where fat fucks like CC can still excel and get paid. 

Hockey is my favorite pro sport, and one of old school values for sure.  Wanna act like a punk?  You'll get beat the fuck up, then have to go back out there and play again in two minutes.  It has a built-in ego checking machine and I love that. 

As for the OP, I'd say it should have been included for sure.  It's the only standout tragic event this year and def should have been mentioned regardless of the nationality of the players or teams.

I'm content with just watching soccer/getting soccer news on FSC, and the few EPL and Champions League games played on ESPN. I can read the rest online. Most of the soccer analysts on ESPN are straight retarded and not enjoyable to listen to in the slightest... Every time Alexi Lalas comes on I'm in a state of constant facepalm.

I wasnt trying to start hockey/soccer vs basketball/football beef. I dont care about soccer or hockey, but I dont care if other people do. I just personally dont watch them. They dont interest me. I just dont think its fair to say that NHL athletes somehow are less money hungry than any other pros.


Regardless, I still dont think its a big deal. ESPN has always been a predominantly traditional American sports network, thus thats who they report on. The end.

how the fuck is hockey boring?? mlb takes 4 fucking hours of 2 guys playing catch. basketball stops every 30 seconds for a gay foul call when a guy touches another ones arm or some stupid shit like that. i love football but its 4 second plays followed by a 30 second break. hockey actually continues for more than a minute and you can actually make contact with somebody without getting a fucking penalty.

i love watching soccer. i watch it as much as i can, but if I'm watching it on espn the minute it goes to halftime its time to change the channel, they say some of the stupidest shit i have ever heard. the commentators arent bad, but the half time host are terrible. thank god i have FSC.

Can't argue with that and agree it's certainly terrible, but a single driver dying in a crash in a race isn't exactly...  Uh...  Not sure how to say it without sounding callous...  But totally unexpected I guess?  A race car driver dying in a crash (the unfortunate byproduct of speed at times) is not in the same "tragic" league as a whole team dying in a plane crash imho- well outside the scope of the inherent dangers of their sport. 

Not trying to downplay the Wheldon crash, but trying to put it into perspective I guess.

ESPN does a fine job with their coverage of soccer for those who say they don't.

An MLS game of the week is totally sufficient during the MLS season, as they play one game a week, and the game they show is usually pretty good. There was another comment about the "boreshow that is the MLS these days" - the MLS has actually drastically stepped its game up and last season was the best ever.

i would also like to add as i have read further into this thread that hockey players are very underpaid for how many games and how intense their sport is compared to other major sports. baseball blows my mind, you have almost 0 risk playing baseball besides fucking your arm up.. which isnt really that bad. sure you have the random guy getting hit by a broken bat or someone getting really injured from being hit by a ball but those incidents are very very rare.

at least 90% of professional ahtletes are probably underpaid. but if someone else cant make money with you, you wont get money, simple as that.
