Binding mounting issue

Sounds like an intresting situation. They should not really have let you ski on the skis with only 3 binding screws in it. We get it quite often where a customer brings in an old binding with screws missing. Normally if we have the screw we just replace it, but If we didnt we would drill the ski but not mount the binding, so it could not be skied.

When the binding pulled out, how far did they remount the binding from the original holes, or did they heli coil it? If they heli coiled it, this was always going to happen. It can work on cruiser skis but will not work on par4k skis. If they remounted in a differnt postion far enough away from the original holes then they are doing somthing wrong. Wrong hole diameter maybe or perhaps they striping the threads doing the bolts up.

Find out if there techs are Marker certified. If there not they should not be setting up your bindings, but Im guessing they had a jig if they mounted teh bindings so chances are there certified. It does not matter if there a K2 dealer.

Go in and chat to the manager about the situation and see what he will do for you. Dont go in pissed off asking for new skis this will get you nothing. Be reasonable and just chat to the manager and hopefully they will sort you out.

they were not heli coiled, they mounted them i think a centimeter back. But what im wondering is if they are legally obliged to replace them, seeing as they have now drilled them twice over about 6 days of riding. Is there a chance they will not replace them?

There is no legal obligation for them to replace them. Its unlickly that 1 screw missing the first time meant the binding ripped ot. If it was 1 cm back the second time thats fine as well. Unless you can prove that they messed somthing up during the mounting, they dont really have to do anything for you. The fact they only mounted with 3 screws the first time and did not tell you is your best bet at getting somthing done.

Your best bet as I said is to go in and calmy chat to the owner, explain your situation and just see if he will help you out. Chances are if you are calm and polite he he help you out, if your a dick though you will get nothing.

im actually completely certain the that the three screw's caused this, only because iv had a screw pull on a different ski and brought that in and they said i was lucky because if i had skied on it much longer the entire binding would pull. If you only have three screws it creates an uneven distribution of the stress put on each screw and in turn puts more stress on the other screws.

just curious what drill bit K2 recomends?  sounds like they used a 4.1 diameter bit drilling too wide a hole... just a thought, but on all wood core skis (no metal in the core), i always use the 3.5 and tap the holes for a better hold. 

case and point, armada recomends a 4.1 bit, i still like using the 3.5 and tapping the holes

That is horrible. It sounds like it was totally their fuck up and they should replace it, but I'm not sure if they legally need to. I sure hope they do! Good luck man!

The three screws was probably the cause of the first pull out, but why would they pull out immediately again with four screws? The likelyhood that they used the wrong bit twice or messed something else up twice seems pretty slim. Maybe there is some issue with that spot in the core of the ski? Dunno, weird problem.

The thing that would bum me out is that a ski that has been drilled once is worth a lot more than a ski thats been drilled twice, now you'll have to drill three times so you can't remount ever again and you can't really sell them.

The three screw issue is unlickly to have caused the issue. It may have meant that the screw next to the one missing would strip, but seeing how they all striped evenly, and the fact it stripped the same after means the missing screw proberbly had nothing to do with it. I have skied on bindings with missing screws and never stripped a binding.

It is more lickly they used too big a hole, however there is no hard and fast rule for diameters of holes so really they have no obligation to replace the skis.

Hopefully they will help you out though, so long as you dont go in all mad, and demanding new skis.

Bringing them back today, i guess we will see how it goes.
