well there is this cafe on commerical in vancouver that has been selling pot and cops and stuff hadnt done anything till yesterday. I went by here a couple weeks a go and it was pretty cool place.
'It's not being ignored by police anymore. This evening they raided the Da Kine Cafe on Commercial Drive. Dozens of police officers moved in just before 6pm, shutting down Commercial Drive between Napier and Parker. Constable Sarah Bloor tells News1130, half a dozen people have been taken into custody for trafficking. She says, it was obvious these individuals were flaunting their activity. She adds, police have acted based on public safety concerns. Hundreds of angry residents yelled insults at reporters and police from outside police lines. They say the cafe has kept dealers out of the neighbourhood.'
anyone thoughts?

that blows. were they even semi-legal though? it seems a bit sketchy. but I think the part about keeping dealers away is a good point

'public safety concerns' that's such bullshit. If anything neighboring stores will just sell more chips and twinkies.

Pete is currently sulking around Mt. Hood, shooting with Poor Boyz Productions and hitting on Kristi Leskinen. She hates guys, Pete lamented, so it’s not going good. Apparently Canada isn’t the only thing that’s tough for Pete to get into.

Thats all fine and dandy but guess what... IT IS AGAINST THE LAW. now i am not an opponent of pot but until the law changes they have every right and obligation to do what they did. Now i am not saying that it isnt shitty but they were just doing their jobs

The argument that the cafe kept dealers out of the neighborhood is interesting though... it shows that open, honest drug trafficking can be safer than our current systems of illegality.

it is a very good argument that it kept it safer, it does show promise in the possibility of legalizing it, which i am in no way against. Granted this is canada and i am a lowly michigander

Isn't weed legal in Canada? Well you may say in small amounts but, if they divided the weed up among the people in the store, they could have gotten off on a technicality. Or I could just be retarded.

Approximately 1/2 of all homicides in Canada occur within a four block radius of Main and Hastings. The downtown eastside postal code is the poorest(either overall, or per capita) in Canada, and yet it's probably the closest neighbourhood to Vancouver's downtown core where residential and commercial uses could wonderfully mix. On top of that, a major portion of Vancouver's historic architecture resides within the neighbourhood. Yet, somehow, the solicitor general and the police(under his orders, presumably) find that closing down a cafe that happens to sell marijuana a better use of their time than taking care of the huge problem no one wants to talk about, being the downtown eastside.
I'm not one to condone flagrantly breaking laws, but some laws are borderline unjust, and the ones pertaining to weed are among them. There are better uses of police time and money than busting a cafe like the Da Kine.

I'm really surprised that this happened becuase I usually live in bellingham WA which is 25 minutes from the border and i know a lot of people that go to these cafes ie amsterdam cafe and blunt brothers (which burned down how ironic hehe) but these cafes are well know and they didn't get shut down before. I really wonder what the reason or what prompted this.
But the idea that it kept dealers off the streets is really cool. I guess most peoples problem with drugs is the dealings more thna the use because the lead to shaddy people and sketchy situations where people can get shot or stabbed and such but the cafe kept these dealings in the open outta dark corners and watched over by their peers. I'm really impressed with this idea. Canada still kicks ass but that sucks

They have been shut down before. I've been going to cafe's down there for like 8 years. It's just a cycle of getting shut down and new ones opening up, to inevitably be shut down.

Jibthis is right. The downtown eastside is the real problem. It is one of the worst places in Canada for home;essness, heroin, and cocaine addictions. This is police hoping to deal with one problem while ignoring te real problem.
And, Skibumdreams, you said it doesn't matter because it's against the law and that's that.
No. Obviously you've never been to Vancouver. We are the most liberal city in North America when it comes to weed. Obviously Amsterdam takes the worldwide title. But there are a whole bunch of 'hemp cafes' that the police ignore. The cops also don't care if you are smoking weed. The only time that they care is if they catch you dealing. Then they might book you if you have a fairly large amount. The truth is they just don't have the time to deal with pot. They have so many grow operations springing up they can't get rid of them fast enough. They have about 400 grow ops right now that they know about but haven't busted for lack of time. And that's only the ones they KNOW about. That combine with the drug problem down by Main and Hastings, and they have a full plate. They just don't care anymore.
Oh and by the way, if anybody wants to see 2 amazing documentaries about the Downtown Eastside,
they're called, 'Through a Blue Lense' and 'Fix: The Story of an Addicted City.' If you see them on. It'll be worth your while.
Warning: If you are reading this then this warning is for you. Every word you read of this useless fine print is another second off your life. Don't you have other things to do? Is your life so empty that you honestly can't think of a better way to spend these moments? Or are you so impressed with authority that you give respect and credence to all who claim it? Do you read everything you're supposed to read? Do you think everything you're supposed to think? Buy what you're told you should want? Get out of your apartment. Meet a member of the opposite sex (or same sex if you prefer). Stop the excessive shopping and masturbation. Quit your job. Start a fight. Prove you're alive. If you don't claim your humanity you will become a statistic.
You have been warned…

im on a public terminal so im not going to spend time reading but there was an article in the paper qabout this a couple days ago. its all the olympics fault, supposedly tourists are scared of people who do drugs (aka most people are morons with either extreme paranoia or no will) and the city is trying to shape up its image before 2010.

Guess what? In the long run, this could be good news. Decriminalization is coming, and the police are gonna try to hit everything they can before it does.
Marc emery got 4 months for sharing a joint with some1, and an honours student got 3 for smoking pot. Just weather the storm, and we will be fine for the rest of our lives.

I don't agree with everyone bashing on the cops for shutting down Da Kine. Not that I haven't had issues with cops in the past, but they were just doing their jobs. The only reason that Da Kine got shut down is because they were flagrantly violating the law and it was documented all week in the Vancouver Sun. The cops only raided them after people complained about the situation. I for one could care less if weed is legalized or not, it doesn't affect me in any way, but until it is, it's still illegal to sell it. As for the 'angry residents' who heckled the cops, from what I read they were more of the pot advocates and professional protesters that seem to flourish here in Van, hippies basically.

i dunno what you people are talking about this is on commerical not hastings quite a distance from the other cafes.
This is the first one that is openly selling pot to anyone and everyone. They just had another story on news and they showed them selling more today. So who knows what will happen.
