I mean, no, you don't need more tripod shots, a video is defined by a personal style. You seem to like using your Glidecam a lot, so that sort of defines you. It all comes down to personal preference.
Very, very sharp, good colors (apart from a little over saturation), and smooth footage. I thoroughly enjoyed that.
Yeah, I used to do that a lot, and love doing that (@11mm on my lens though). My riders kept on getting mad at me though when I'd miss the banger tricks' landings because I was "getting artsy". My biggest fear with pumping out frequent edits is redundancy, so I'll definitely keep that stuff in mind.
Colors were extremely nice, however I'd get closer with the angles you take with the glide cam. For example on the two tricks over the barrel feature you couldn't see the immediate landing, which for me is really important. So just keep that in mind and possibly get closer on jump follow by's, but just my opinion.
and yes, he could do that, but so many people do that too. it's not like that's a unique way to film either. i actually think mike is doing something sort of unique with his glidecam footage in that he is always just going so damn fast on the jumps and such. kind of reminds me of the way evan sometimes does it, but even faster. idk, there's just something about these edits that feels new to me.
it just looks so awkward when lines are filmed shoulder height without massive distortion.
also not your problem as a filmer but it really bugs me when people pizza before hitting rails, looks so stupid and just makes it seem like you cant ski for shit. so tell that guy not to do that because he is clearly a good skier
This. Every time a rider tells me to film from some angle or whatever I tell him to let me do my job and let him worry about landing tricks.
Mike decent looking edit, colors are getting better. If you're gonna shoot @11 you need to get in their face, especially on the jumps (and some rails which just appeared to be random positioning that wasn't planned) some shots were pretty far away.
The key I think to avoiding redundancy isn't always if you use a glide cam or if you use a tripod. The skiing, the music, the setting (hard to change) and overall camera movements and perspective determines a lot.
That one dude said film up close with a fisheye, obviously this comment should be taken with a grain of salt but he brings up a point, low street style shots can look sick. Glide cam height can get old. Try this (kevin/paul first told me about it and ive be trying it out more) flip your glide cam upside down.... it sounds crazy but since its balanced, it works both ways! you just have to flip in post (mad easy especially if you leave your cam on for a whole run or if you use mpeg to transcode, it has a rotate option i believe) and you get a different perspective. Changing perspective is key, there are so many different ways to film with a glide cam and it will enhance your content and make it seem less redundant.
sounded like what he was saying was not to change the filming, just to throw a fisheye on the camera, which sounds way worse than the idea you suggested.
indeed. That's why I love using it over sliders, you can get much more creative with the "tracks" rather than going in a fixed linear motion (nothing wrong with that if that's they way you swing).
Ima try the upside down thing soon, I think we're taking a break from hotel living... 4 edits in a week (working on a 5th) is too much for me haha
Wow that was impressive Mike! You're new stuff is awesome! Just wondering though what did you use for audio? It sounded pretty good, was it a videomic straight into the t2i with ML?
That was internal audio, I personally like it over my videomic at times. The reason being that you get a more "coarse" sound from the internal audio. The major drawback of that is that I get a lot of wind chatter since there's no windscreen but I do have a micromuff on the way!
