A long term ban passed by Clinton in 1994 is now expiring monday and not going to be renewed. The Federal law bans sales of 19 semiautomatic assult riles. The ban is being lifted because of intense lobbying by the NRA and Bush's lack to do anything. The 19 specific weapons have military feautres and the ban also included magazines that hold more than 10 rounds of ammunition.

'The House majority leader, Representative Tom DeLay of Texas, dismissed the ban as 'a feel-good piece of legislation' and said flatly that it would expire Monday, even if Mr. Bush made an effort to renew it.'

Finally I can own a personal semiautomatic assult rifle to keep my family safe. The need and necessity of having these type of guns is overwhelmingly sweet.

hey, you know what? A nine millimeter will kill someone just as much as a semiautomatic assult rifle. If someone wanted to sneak into your house and kill you, you would be dead either way, unless you wear kevlar to sleep. However, I really don't understand the point of owning an assult rifle in the first place, unless someone is seriously paranoid about proctecting themselves. But really, I don't think that the lifting of the ban has much effect. I live in a small town though, so what do I know.

Yay, we git big guns back. The ban wasn't doing anything anyway. The gangstaz were getting them on the black market anyway. Now we can get some so we can shoot the gangstaz. Plus we get more bullets to shoot them with. Bout time this thing passed. I need a gun too, can you get one at 18, or do you have to be 21. My dad could probably sell me one from his collection anyway. M1A whith banana clip What!?

KLD, i think that semiautomatic rifles are also quite a bit more powerful than 9MM handguns.

KLD, that's plain ignorance. Sure, a bullet from a pistol will kill you just as dead as a bullet from an assault rifle. The difference is that you can kill a lot more people a lot easier with an assault rifle.

i can see where this is going. here come false accusations that it's bush's fault the ban was not extended. someone will try to take advantage of the fact that some people will believe anything you tell them, and that a lot of dumb kids think dissin on Bush is the 'cool' thing to do, and say he is now responsible for gun related crime. the fact is, that this particular piece of legislature doesn't really even do that much, and the amount and types of guns on the street aren't going to change considerably. this has been talked about before when someone posted a stupid thread warning us how bush is going to make congress let this ban expire, when really the president has no part in the part of the legislative process that this bill was currently in. the reason it expired is that the vast majority of congress felt no need to renew it because it was mostly useless. i just thought i would make a preemptive strike shooting down whatever dumb accusations were about to be made.

If someone wanted to do something really bad and illegal that could get a full auto AK illegally. If militia men up in minnesota want to shoot assault rifles at trees and osama targets i don't give a shit. Plus lets not forget, guns are fun!

i think what KLD (what) is sayin is that if someone is goin to sneak into your house with a gun with intent on killing you, your dead anyways. but he didnt look at the big picture. if you go into someplace hugely public (hugely public?) a lot more people will die.

i use m14 in socom. haha.

The lift on the ban just allows fat middleaged men in Minnesota who like to pretend they are in the army to buy a fully liscensed automatic firearm, and they aren't doing anyone harm, besides messing their mom's basement which they live in.

The fact of it is though that I think is rediculous is WHO really needs a semiautomatic assult rifle?? Well its obvious, gun collectors, criminals, and insane people. Thus if you are not in one of these categories why would you feel the need at all to support the expiring of this ban? Its just rediculous...

What it will mean is that people that would have potentially been picked up by the police for having one illegaly will be able to buy it, buy ammo, and keep it with no threat against them. In addition it means that when someone does decide to go do some dammage it wont be small like a 9mm berata. there's a reason why the army uses assult rifles not pistols

Hey guys I'd hate to burst your bubble but go into your local gunshop and you can already buy assault rifles. The ban was on importing or manufacturing not selling. This is a big misconception. In order to protect gunshops they are allowing them to sell what they already had in stock. I've seen m-16's, AP-9's and UZI's for sale all recently. These weapons are already available for purchase and are pepople jumping through your windows with machine guns everyday? Does this ever happen? The most damage people have done against civilians in this country are with hunting rifles or high-powered rifles with scopes anyway (clocktowers,buildings,trunks of cars exc.) Whens the last time someone has killed a ton of people in a crowded place in America with machine guns? Are they any less effective then going to your local hardware store and building a pipebomb and lighting it off in a subway? I've said this once and I'll say it again, If someone wants to kill a lot of people he will do it whether or not he can legally buy a machine gun at a store. (Also you need a class 3 license to buy fully automatic weapons and those licenses are very expensive and a pain in the ass to get)

ice is scary, those assault rifles are all semi's, not automatics. automatics are the ones that are going to be legal which is bad. no civilian no to fire an automatic m16. just look at how the automatic thompson sub machine guy helped the mafia and other organized crime.

theres no such thing as a semi-auto uzi. they are all fully auto. right now since they cannot be replaced they are more expensive the uzi was about 3500 bucks used just because it was preban. M-16 can be either semi auto (when they are semi they are called colt match target rifles) or fully auto, gunsmiths can install the conversion kit. I'm not saying the street should be flooded with these but there are already a shitload of these in circulation and society isn't out of control anarchy with terrorists with machineguns blasting down civilians daily. Renewing the manufacture/import ban will only make them expensive it wont get rid of a single gun. Untill the government wants to start paying dealers for these guns and get them off the streets/destroy them there will always be the millions that are already in circulation. I just dont think its something that we need to worry about. If a terrorist wants to get a machine gun I don't think he'll buy it at a gunstore legally. Theres like 20 different criteria you need to fufill in order to buy one and your average terrorist wont meet the critera and will have to buy one illegally anyway.

ice-is-scary is right. a friend of mine went to mexico and came back with a fully auto ak-47 for$100, that is illegal, deff, but he got one even with the ban. the ban is on automatic weapons, and certain accessories on semi auto weapons: hangun magazines couldnt be made to hold more than 10 rounds, same with 'assult rifles', batonet lugs could not be made for weapons (no how many psychos kill people with the bayonet???)certain types of grips and STOCKS, for crying out loud, how does the grip or stock kill someone????

there are plenty of preban parts on the market for semi auto rifles that are legal.

and preban parts couldnt be legally put on a postban rifle, so a bayonet lug from '93 cant be put on a rifle from '94

i bet THAT stopped those evil gun collectors from killing all those poor people!!!

cheaperthandirt.com sells preban stuff really cheap.

this lift on the ban does nothing for or against the circulation of either legal or illegal assult weapons, it just makes a guy have to buy more magazines and reload the mags more often when target shooting

there will still be a class 3 liscense needed.

there is an organization set up by the goverment to curb the use and distribution of illegal firearms wether its a deringer or m-60 squad machine guns, it called the ATF, they do everything in their power to stop the flood of illegal weapons. in fact, i hope to join them. and i think they could tell you that the collapsable stock doesnt kill anyone

I agree with ice is scary. The ban is meaningless, just like metal detectors at schools. If some crazy person wants to do something like mow a ton of people down with an assault rifle, he is going to get it legally or illegaly. Criminals like that don't think the way that you and i do. I am not saying that I approve of assault rifles. I dont. I think that they are pointless to the general public and serve no positive purpose, but a law isnt going to do jack to prevent big time criminals from getting them.
