Crohn's Disease

Hey guys,
a great friend of mine and an awesome skier has been diagnosed with Crohns. I know the basics about the disorder, but not a single fucking doctor or gastro intestinal specialist in Quebec wants or puts the effort in helping my buddy.

So I turn to you NS, can anyone refer a CANADIAN specialist that he can see so he can make a come back? Could anyone help out with the names of the different meds? Could someone recommend a diet for him so he can at least confortably until he finds the proper meds?

Thanks guys...he missed last season from a knee injury and now this. I want to see him back!

chrons=no fun. it's not to extreme, but still, its not fun to live with.

one thing that helps me is a LOT of fiber. I mean just down Fiber1 bars all day errday.

Try and eventually aim for Adalimumab (thats what i take, and its boss) its an anti tnf drug, but its expensive, so they usually try you on cheaper steroids before (Prednisolone, Azathioprine, Mercaptopurine). But id have thought he'd at least be on something like Budesonide, to ease the symptoms while they fully diagnose. It all depends on how bad it is, medical history etc etc, but at least you could research those drugs.

Diet-wise go for low fibre, low fat, low dairy, no spice. Just simple foods like rice, chicken, (cooked veg with the skin off).

But depending on how bad he is, he might have to go on a pure liquid diet, with supplement shakes (eg prescribed medical ones, not the crap you use for weightloss)

Thing is most people react differently, so theres not one diet fits all.

He told me the doctor is trying Cortisone...he says it is better than nothing, but he still cant get back to his daily routine.

He is monitoring the thread, so I thank you guys on his behalf. Once again +karma to you guys

Dont really know the guy well but some guy working where i used to live had it bad. Just moved up from texas to work and was barely there before shit got crazy.


He had multiple surgeries in the last few mnths and had part of his intensines remove, maybe even some other stuff.


It can be hardcore.


And op, good luck to your friend. Hopefully he can find a good place and get on the meds or whatever he needs to get better and be out shredding with you soon.

I cant help for treatment or anything, but for motivation, show him Dave Crichton's segments from Strike 3 and Forward, its difficult to ski but you can do it.

This is pretty spot on. The only thing I can add to this is Mesalazine, an NSAID used to treat moderate/mild forms of Chron's disease.

I do not suffer from this condition I only study this shit so I can't really tell you much in terms of how it will affect your friend. Mesalazine being an NSAID though makes it a fairly safe without many serious side effects.

Hope your friend gets the disease under control.

Also, to freestylers mate. Hang in there, its shitty but believe me, once you overcome the worst of it, putting any weight you've lost back on, is one of the best things ever. I realise it may be trivial, but when you've pretty much not eaten anything for weeks, coming back onto food is deffo something to look forward to!

Hope its a speedy recovery

vibes for you friend man.

My sister has had crohns for almost 10 years now. I was really rough for her at first and she had a few surgeries but it seems pretty under control now. I would highly suggest finding someone as close as possible who is in it for the long haul because from my experience you need a crohns doctor who is always there and to go to periodically for check ups.

Dieting:

Basically stay away from things that irritate the digestive system. Spicy foods, foods that are difficult to digest, raw vegetables and fruits I think.

Foods that are hard to digest are big. Seeds, corn, basically anything that you can see in your shit still that your body didnt break down, to put it crudely. These are things that just irritate the hell out of the track and will lead to flare ups. I'll talk to my sister and check back after I ask what she would eat when she was just starting and had flare ups.

this. My mom has Crohns, and shes had it since I was probably 5? (21 now). She had to be on meds for a while, as will your friend. Once he gets it under control its good to try to wean yourself off the medication. My mom used to have to take upwards of 10 pills a day, and now she barely takes one. Its really important to watch what you eat, and she takes natural digestive enzymes to help. Also, aloe juice works really well to help with digestion and prevent flare ups.

oh believe me, I agree with this.

I was just saying its not to extreme, because some people will be like "OMG ARE YOU DYING?" when they find out I have chrons.


I'm still on the lucky side though, no surgeries or anything yet. its still in the early early stages. I found out like last year after going to the gastroenterologist because I was shitting blood for two weeks.

Like I said, seeds, corn, potato skins, kernels, and other things that do not get broken down, spicy foods no no. When he has a flare up and is feelin bad stay away from all veggies, fruit, dairy, meat. I sure there are more to look out for but these are the essentials.

make sure he takes it seriously because if it gets really bad they sometimes take out your colon and you have to wear a stool bag your entire life. that would probably end skiing.
