Tokina 11-16

Hey guys ,

I'm thinking of buying the Tokina 11-16. Do you guys recommend it ? If yes why. And if no , Why ?

^ Yup, but long story short, it's an awesome wide angle for pretty much any camera except the 5d which has too big of a sensor so you can only use it at 16mm, and it's still overly wide..

Nice wide angle with little distortion, very sharp, etc. Recommended by pretty much anyone on here. The canon mount one is kinda hard to get if I remember well it was always backordered, but I got mine on ebay.

It's gonna be 700$ ish wherever you get it.. usually prices for video stuff don't vary much. Either B&H or a trusted ebay seller

I like it. The other lens I would consider would be a 12-24 f4. Not sure what mount your using, but Nikkor's is awesome, haven't heard much about Tokina's. Has a much more versatile range than the 11-16, but isn't as fast. Just something to think about.

This is true... but the 11-16 goes a millimeter wider (pretty big difference between 11 and 12, really) and it's a whole stop faster. And it's sharper.

But yes, 12-24 is more versatile in its range, and the Tokina 12-24 is cheaper than the 11-16.

well 99% of us shoot crop, obviously UWA on a 5d/1d is going to be a different story. Its definitely the best UWA for 1.6/1.5 crops sensors.

facepalm....... tokina is about 700$ and the 14mm is about 2300$........... so yes tokina is the best for your money !

Simply put, its the best UWA you can get for APS-C sensors. It's fast, sharp, and very little CA/fringe. Hell, it it distorts less than my 70-200 when you defocus it.

I may be selling mine somewhere down the line for a Nikon mount version. EOS aperture control = shit.

what do you think is the best UWA thomas, for FF? I'm curious, I'm not a huge fan of the 14L's distortion. I'm almost tempted to get an 11-16 and keep it at 16mm...

Honestly what do you expect from a lens that wide? You can fix the distortion in post anyway. That would be a stupid purchase and a waste of money, get a 16-35 if you desire something with that width, which is still technically wider then the 11-16 on a cropped body.

Jamie, isn't it nice being able to get super wide shots at 16/17mm? Oh how I love full frame.

oh full frame is amazing ;) wish I could shoot UWA more!

and its pretty hard to fix distortion for video in post unlike photos :(

maybe i'll just get a 15 fish instead. that's a sweet lens!

i think the obvious solution is to stop doing video and only shoot photos, I mean you do use a DSLR after all, then you don't have to worry about not being able to fix things :D

Meaning the only way you can control it is through the body electronically so if you want to use the lens on any other camera, you're fucked.

so by that you mean it can be only used on EOS cameras, vs a nikon you could use on a nikon body and sony and panasonic ect. ?

yeah with nikons you can control them manually, even if its an automatic or electronic lens. But, 99% of nikons lenses have an aperture ring. But with the ability to manually control aperture, you can use it on other cameras like sony and panasonic.

This solution works for prime lenses 28mm and up. Unfortunately there's no vintage UWA that's comparable to the 11-16, and telephotos tend to be push/pull designs which are obnoxious for video.

Ideally I would just use Angenieux 16mm lenses and adapt them to 2/3 and be done with it.
