New helmet laws in Canada

For those of you who don't want to read it, basically in Nova Scotia, starting in Nov 2012, it will be illegal to ski or snowboard without a helmet. If you are caught without one, you will be required to pay a $250 ticket.

I am a firm believer in this law and fully believe it should be the same in the States.

Thoughts?

Canadians pay for each others healthcare. Thus the government should be able to step in and force others to not risk themselves and cost the system more money. Makes sense.

adam delorme corey vanular ahmet dadali parker white  laurant favre candide thovex charles gagnier liam downey plus 100 other pros would probably say mind your own business. novia scotia is ice. the rockies, especially depending on conditions have much softer snow. i can understand nova scotiia tho. canada is socialists, dont be all upset because someone whose not wearing a helmut cork 9s a kicker you wouldnt even straight air. your not a pussy for wearing a helmet, some people just dont like the feel of them. do skateboarders wear helmuts?

I don't know of any dad that would ever say his son shouldn't wear a helmet. that is stupid. Obviously the dad is responsible for his child's death. However your last paragraph makes absolutely no sense.

    Its sounding like a money grab and Politics getting into freedom to me? This is how it starts. Next thing ya know youll walk out the lodge and forget to put your seat belt oops i mean helmet on and youll get a fine before you even have your bindings snaped on your boots!!

What do you mean it makes no sense? It's just a charicature of half the people in this thread who say helmets are good and important, but in no way should the government tell them what to do.

Except not. Because again, as a Canadian citizen, you pay for others healthcare. Thus in order to keep costs down, the government wants to minimize injuries and hospital costs that come out of YOUR pocket as a payer into the universal system. If it was private insurance and little Joeys brain hemorrhage and resulting medical bills were only his own responsibility that would be one thing, but in Canada it comes out of everyones pocket when someone doesn't wear a helmet, knocks their brain out and then has costly surgeries/procedures. Not sure why this idea is so hard to understand...

This law isn't about Canada having privatized health care, it has to do with Nova Scotia having an NDP government. Nova Scotians asked for these kinds of laws when they elected the NDP. You don't have to worry about this kind of law popping up anywheres else unless a more left-wing government is put in place.

No, stop being a retard. If that was the case then the same would apply to the people that choose to eat unhealthy foods, choose to smoke, choose to put their lives at risk in any way.
There are people that eat fast food and processed foods lol why would anyone pay for other people who give themselves cancer/diabetes and then need to go to the hospital? Pull your head out of your ass.

I've never really hit my head skiing park, but I still wear a helmet, and I'll tell you why. A while back, I saw a little gaper hit his head on a dance floor box REALLY HARD and he ended up with BAD permanent brain damage cause he wasn't wearing a helmet. I thought to myself, well that's cause he has no clue how to ski park. Then, about a month later, a really good skier hit his head on a box and I guess he's like paralyzed now. Fucked him up. He slayed park too, last person you'd ever expect for that to happen to. Ever since then I've worn my helmet cause I realized that every skill level can fuck themselves up. The gaper was trying something new, and so was the pro.

Seems like a totally cliche deal and super obvious but people still don't really consider it deeply enough.

Yep. On a seperate note, I wear a helmet every day. I think it's a good idea when you are riding park or skiing trees or cliffs, or anytime where the risk of injury is higher. But as a lifty, I see plenty of people every day, old and young, who just ride groomers and take it easy, and probably wouldn't ever wear a helmet. Try telling buddy on his straight skis, sunglasses and bare head he has to wear a helmet. Also, the worst concussion I ever endured (and out cold for 15min, season ender) I was wearing my helmet. Stoked I had my helmet on because it could have been way worse, but helmets still don't guarantee 100% safety.

My friend's dad (good skier) was skiing WITH a helmet and some kid came out of nowhere and straight up blindsided him. Even with the helmet, he was life flighted out and still isn't ok from it or back to work.... it happened 4 years ago. I personally wear a lid, and the good kind of outweighs the bad. Death < Not Death.

I don't what the problem is. I like to wear a helmet to protect my dome but there is no need for the government to require me to do so. Albeit after a point brought up in this thread I do see the point of this law in Canada because of the fact that everybody's medical bills are paid for by the taxpayers.

You also have to understand, that even the "free" health care paid by everyone is consolidated, insitutionalized and insuranced. It's not like the "health care" taxation goes up by 0,5% everytime a 100 skiers get paralyzed - it's partitioned in the government budget as well.

What I'm getting out of reading these replies says that most of you would quit your job at a resort if they required you to wear a helmet if you were going to be skiing or riding on the clock. At my resort where I work, ANY employee who rides their skis or snowboard while in uni / on the clock MUST wear a helmet or they will get fired. I'm kinda surprised about all of the people against this law...

I'm all for it.

But I've always worn a helmet since I was a kid, so its hard to imagine not wearing one.

Its just not worth the risk of a major head injury to not wear one.

I believe people should have all rights to not wear a helmet. I wear one and I trust it with my life. But personal freedom is more important in my view. Accidents and injuries are on the descent in Canada.

Also, helmets do not protect against concussions and severe head trauma....it helps reduce the risk of one. So why force it?
 
Heh, imagine the level 4 CASI people that believe image is more important that functionality. I have yet to meet a level 4 who actively wears a helmet.

i'm sure this will only be enforced on patrolled resorts

i want to make a few points, not only is this a $ issue but it's also a humane issue, think mandatory seat belts while driving, getting a head injury is so messed up that it could completely mess you up for the rest of your life.  people will get used to it and forget about it, and obviously some will choose to disobey

this law will keep:

1)  Taxe$ down for tax payers, and if you're too young to pay taxes talk to your parents, trust me when you get older and 30% - 40% of your income goes out the window, you will start caring

2)  Keep the insurance premium$ for the resorts down, hence keeping the lift ticket price$ down

3)  Keep laweyer fee$ down for the resorts, and you'd be surprised how many injuries at resorts end up in the courts both for skiing and mountain biking, and resorts have gone bankrupt because of this in the past

I dont give a shit about health care exept when I need it:]]] I do wear my helmut most of the time. I mean there have been some spring days when im just hanging out at a race watching and skiing down to the chair and back to the race when i havent. Im more aware Im not wearing one and do consider that whan skiing.

   What I dont agree with is there being a fine for not wearing one!!!!!!!!!!!! Thats the only part I have trouble with. Do I think everyone should wear one?? I think so Maybe not sure? The point hear for me isnt weather or not everyone is wearing one. Its fineing people who arnt. it clear most skiers and boarders are wearing one these days. Even rental places are issuing them as part of the package. {this should be manditory BTW}  Fines are never a good thing and get out of hand. They make it a burden finatualy for people. Thats not the answer. i dont know what the answer is. But its not that to me.
