New helmet laws in Canada

For those of you who don't want to read it, basically in Nova Scotia, starting in Nov 2012, it will be illegal to ski or snowboard without a helmet. If you are caught without one, you will be required to pay a $250 ticket.

I am a firm believer in this law and fully believe it should be the same in the States.

Thoughts?

I don't know, making people wear helmets = sport less "cool" to trendsters and hipsters on the outside = less runway modeling and outwear comparing idiots on the slopes = sport is again more underground.

Isn't that what you people want?

I dont need the Govt to force me to be safe. I, not the govt/taxpayers, pay for my own healthcare. Im tired of the Gov't forcing laws down peoples throats that are made to help 'protect' people. If me not wearing a helmet is possibly going to injure SOMEONE ELSE then I could understand.
I guarantee you that the liberal, nanny state that is my homestate, NY, will be the first one to mandate helmets for all.

That being said wearing a helmet is obviously smarter than not wearing one.

i dont know how old you are but in the real world money doesn't grow on trees. i work full time(over 45 hours a week) and have to put about 95 percent of my pay check towards rent and food.  the rest goes towards gas money to get to the mountain and if im lucky a couple of beers for the end of the day.  i'm riding skis that are delaming and are missing about 4ft of edge, if i had 60 bucks it would go towards new skis, not a helmet.  skiing isnt cheap and you sound like a snob.  but then again its probably mommy and daddy who pay for everything so you have no real value of money. 

people like you make me want to quite skiing altogether, get off your high horse and come chill with the rest of us.

I mean, I've always thought of that whole movement as a huge joke. I never thought people were actually serious about keeping anything "underground." Personally I don't see why more exposure is bad, the more money we can get into this sport the better. There will always be an underground branch of the sport if people want there to be I suppose.

I just think that people should be free to make their own choices, but considering Canadian taxpayers are getting free healthcare I think it's acceptable. Why should anyone have to pay because somebody else didn't want to be safe?

In the US it's a different case, health care for the most care is privatized, as long as every family pays for their own healthcare I think we shouldn't be forced to do anything or pay up a fine. That's just silly, people should be smart enough to wear helmets and I wish everyone is, but if you don't want to, and you pay for your own healthcare, then so be it.

people are missing the point of the law it isnt to restrict your freedom rather save taxpayers money. "it costs about $400,000 a year, per injury" and in Canada health care is free so, you are paying for the dumb ass who "choose" not to wear a helmet. anyways if you dont like it go to america(right next door) or the backcountry the law is only when at a resort

Thank you for sharing such a thorough analysis of the canadian's political system, you must have a phd in political science.. Regarding the topic, I share most of the expressed opinions here. Of course wearing a helmet is safer, but since not wearing one can't possibly put anyone in danger beside yourself, I don't see why the government has to tell me how to live my life. I have another example (that probably won't serve my point of view) : the seat belt. Works just the same, compulsory even tho I won't hurt anyone else by not wearing mine. Probably because of the habit, but I can't see this law not existing.

i personally dont see the point and i actually strongly disagree with this law. I've always worn a helmet, never had a problem with it. but if some gaper wants to wear a hat he should still be allowed to, its his head not mine.

BACK TO THE DISCUSSION:

this isn't the first time Canada has passed an intrusive law to 'protect the masses'. Look at DTL (daytime running lamps) on new cars sold in Canada...this shit has been around for 20 something years.

DTL have been shown to reduce daytime traffic accidents, therefore reducing health care costs for the nation. this helmet law is no different.

Ya well it costs us as pass payers money when the resort has to haul your sorry ass of the hill in a sled, and it costs the healthcare system money too, which gets transfered to everyone else through taxes. Its not choice that only affects you.

Even though I am a firm believer in wearing a helmet I disagree with this law for a couple reasons. I think it should be your choice and I don't think a helmet is entirely necessary for just skiing around. When I'm skiing hard I'm definitely wearing a brain bucket. But when I'm working I'm limited to what I can do because I'm in uniform and I just wear a beanie. I do think this law should be in place inside the terrain park though.

To anyone saying natural selection, you could refer to my previous post: at what age do you become a candidate for a Darwin Award? A lot of you who don't want to wear helmets for some reason (or not at all times, granted), would you push that on your children?

Would you say the same thing when your offspring would die, possibly in your arms or maybe whisked away on a mediheli from the slopes... "Yup, natural selection, kid got what was coming for 'im." I'd like to see that, even if your child was over 18 and responsible for himself.

Look at Pekka Hyysalo, and there's one true example in skiing of coming close to death even with a helmet on. He'll get back up to greatness one day, but without a helmet he quite certainly would have died. Would you wish that upon your child/friend/relative/random stranger?

I think this should just apply to ski hills... Once you reach a certain skill level people usually become aware of the dangers and make the decision based on their common sense.

"Under a law passed in the provincial legislature last week, every skier and snowboarder will be legally required to wear a helmet when paying to use lift-accessed skiing after Nov. 1, 2012."

not wearing a helmet is stupid, especially if you're like hucking over 40 foot gaps. however, there shouldn't be a law about it. if you wanna torpedo directly into a tree and cave in your skull, i say go for it, except you can't sue the resort if you get fucked up because you aren't wearing a helmet. maximum freedom, maximum responsibility.

But... you are from the US... your judicial system doesn't exactly have a good reputation when it comes to hurting oneself, be there waivers signed left and right or warnings everywhere, someone always tries to sue anyway and some get away with it.

Of course you can sue a resort for fucking yourself up while not wearing a helmet! Freeeedoooom!
