New helmet laws in Canada

For those of you who don't want to read it, basically in Nova Scotia, starting in Nov 2012, it will be illegal to ski or snowboard without a helmet. If you are caught without one, you will be required to pay a $250 ticket.

I am a firm believer in this law and fully believe it should be the same in the States.

Thoughts?

me three. i just don't see a reason why someone wouldn't wear one. besides the fact that it isn't as comfortable. but i'm not gonna get into this right now because its gonna turn into a shitshow

i completely disagree with all of you. Being a kid who has grown up wearing a helmet, and continues to wear one today, i am a firm believer in wearing one. But if somebody doesn't want to wear one, they should be free not to.

while i agree that everybody should wear a helmet I hate the fact that there is a law forcing people to do so. If your stupid enough to not wear a helmet you are stupid enough to die or hurt yourself seriously

pretty ridiculous, what if your just hiking a flatbox or dont own a helmet. last time i checked most helmets start around 100bucks.  not cheap

As mentioned above, the choice to not wearing a helmet does not put anyone else in danger besides yourself. Its not the governments right to tell people how to live their lives. This law should be fought out of principle. Im not against helmets i wear one on occasion, im just against someone telling me I have to wear one.

Not wearing a helmet for proper riding (ie not hiking a box) is just natural selection at work. Maybe its beneficial to society if they injure/kill themselves skiing because they were too thick to wear a helmet.

actually i think that it depends on who pays the medical bill, when someone fucks their head up. If you have a welfare system, where it's tax money, then it's not only your own problem when you go into a coma and need brain surgery and what not.

If you have to pay for it yourself, then go right ahead and be Cam Riley.

think yourself lucky. here in the uk, there was a box at the local dry slope, but it had to made into a piece of crap because health and safety deemed it "unsafe"

i totally disagree, when im freeriding i almost always wear one, i always wear one for park but, im an instructor and i dont want to wear a helmet when im yelling pizza and picking up a group of tangeled 4 year olds haha

If you can say that, let's expand it to a hypothetical situation:

A man who dislikes helmets has a young son who starts skiing. Since the father doesn't like to wear helmets, he tells the kid not to wear helmets and the kid looks up to him and thinks that's how it should be. Kid hits his head hard on some hardpack, gets brain damage and dies.

So... someone died for not wearing a helmet, who is blamed? Is the little kid at fault for his own death, or the father who pushed his absurd beliefs onto the kid?


What is it with you people and all this "Well it's natural to have a self-preservation instinct and new technological tools to prevent me from dying for hitting my head, but if the government tells me I have to use a helmet they can go fuck themselves".

Quality helmets are expensive. $40 can even be hard to afford. But if you are just hiking your box in you backyard could you get fined? And in the backcountry?

for kids i'm all pro, i think they should be legally forced to wear helmets until a certain age, but for grown up people i think i'd like to reserve myself the right to ski around without helmet and enjoy the fresh breeze through my hair ... (90% of the time i wear a helmet, but every now and then it's nice to just cruise around without a pot on my head ....)

I say law is a little much.

Whether or not this should pass in the states is an irrelevant conversation though. There are states where you don't have to wear a helmet riding a motorcycle... which is drastically more dangerous than skiing.

So until you see country-wide helmet laws on the highways good luck getting them going in the mountains.

I do believe that it should always be a choice. If you wanna fuck your shit up... by all means.

No helmet = perfect organ donor.

dude no. fuck this. it's not a matter of I don't feel like wearing, it's fucking principle. they have these things called precedents. what's gonna happen when shit like this creeps into more aspects of government?

and as far as the "what if you can't afford a helmet" issue goes, if you don't have the money to buy a helmet then fuck you. you are poor and nothing but a drain on society if you can't afford 60 bucks for a bucket if you so choose to value your life, and thus are better off dead.
