I'm a Way Better Driver Than You

Does anyone else get pissed when people say that? I'm 16 so I'm just at the age where people are starting to get their licenses, and people say that with a straight face all the time... Like really? I live in a town where traffic is very minimal, and highway driving is the easiest shit ever, so I don't understand what people are basing their driving abilities off of... I mean, you can definitely be a shitty driver, but as long as you're a competent driver, there really isn't much room to be "better" than someone else... And often, people who say they're great drivers fucking blow dick. So what gives?

Lazy americans.

People who own an automatic by choice and/or think it is the superior transmission type deserve to be bullied imo. In a manual you're in so much more control of the car. Plus they're far more enjoyable to drive than autos.

Driving an auto is like wearing a seatbelt - it shows you're a mediocre driver with a lack of self confidence.

I drive an automatic 911 Turbo S, because it was way cheaper  because it was a Turbo upgraded to a Turbo S by a Porsche dealer.
I dislike it now but it's handy in incredibily shit Dutch traffic.

I still have my manual Mini Cooper John Works gt for really fun rides.

so you just got your license at 16 so that's one year of driving on actual roads by yourself and yet you consider driving on a farm as "experience".... on top of that you explain the ABS system like it hasn't been around for a decade...

one of my friends wrote in my yearbook that i was "the most awful driver ever" cos i stalled like twice when he was in the car. it's funny cos i passed my test first time with two minors, both of which where very small. he failed his test three times before passing and even when he did pass was so unrelaxed and inattentive behind the wheel. seriously, whenever i was in the car with him it was like i was giving him a lesson. also he drives a 1.6 audi A3, i drive a 1.1 peugeot 206. if he drove my var he'd probably crash. seriously, people who say they're a better driver than you are generally the ones not to get in a car with, they're usually the ones who think they have something to prove and drive like idiots.

i'm always bitching about how our highways suck balls when compared to the netherlands or germany....
you can litterally feel when you drive across the border and leave our shitty asphalt full of potholes and enter germany or the netherlands :P

+ i also get mad annoyed about our roadmarkings, in holland and germany they're reflective which is excellent at night in the rain, well in belgium we invest millions in streetlights that burn all night, but a little bit of reflective paint for the markings is too much to ask ....

and our traffic lights, no need to adjust them so they provide fluid traffic flow, thats not necessary.. every friday when i drive home from college there's 1 light where you literally have to line up from 2km in advance just because the traffic light is adjusted in such a way that only 2 or 3 cars can pass each time ...

and then ofcourse in general, we have people who are complete incapable of driving a vehicle in rain/snow/mist ...
especially snow is the worst, they drive like 70km/h on a highway and stick right behind eachother accelerating/braking/accelerate/brake, ffs, drive 110, keep your distance and keep a steady speed !

/end belgian traffic rant...

I got my first race beater when I was 11

I started dirt track racing with the fam when I was 12

I rolled my first car at 13 taking it off a motocross jump

I could rip a standard before I hit puberty

I had my PIT move down pat before my voice lowered

Yeah, you're definitely a better driver than me.  Which one is the brake pedal again?

Belgium: Rough roads but with traffic lights everywhere.

Holland: Silky smooth roads, easy cruising untill you reach the Randstad area.

yeah, i know its the same in Belgium on the "ring" in Brussels or Antwerp, last year we had a record of over 900km traffic jam all over the country...

considering we're only like 300km x 200km i'd say thats quite bad :/

Brussels is also quite bad because that's pretty much the only hub of activity.
Highly concentrated traffic jams

Atleast the Randstad area is reasonably big. So traffic jams are ussually 15km/h crawlers.

You see this is probably a great way to make decent drivers but until you are on the road experience it for real, all the bullshit they tell you in drivers-ed is bullshit.




I like Idaho's approach.


1st Phase

Shitty drivers-ed class for 6 weeks starting when you are 14 and 1/2

2nd Phase

Drive with mom for 6 months

3rd Phase

Acquire license at 15 years old

4th Phase

Drive for a year, turn 16, magically able to drive at night.





Now it might look really dumb at first, but look deeper.

This program leaves a lot of room for error and the potential to make some really shitty drivers, which it does. BUT those shitty drivers will either die or lose their license before they turn 18. Darwinism at its best.

that's a bit too young. most kids don't have the maturity to drive til AT LEAST 18.

Brain and auto safety experts fear that 16-year-olds, the youngest drivers licensed in most states, are too immature to handle today's cars and roadway risks.

New findings from brain researchers at the National Institutes of Health explain for the first time why efforts to protect the youngest drivers usually fail. The weak link: what's called "the executive branch" of the teen brain — the part that weighs risks, makes judgments and controls impulsive behavior. 

Scientists at the NIH campus in Bethesda, Md., have found that this vital area develops through the teenage years and isn't fully mature until age 25. One 16-year-old's brain might be more developed than another 18-year-old's, just as a younger teen might be taller than an older one. But evidence is mounting that a 16-year-old's brain is generally far less developed than those of teens just a little older. 

The research seems to help explain why 16-year-old drivers crash at far higher rates than older teens. The studies have convinced a growing number of safety experts that 16-year-olds are too young to drive safely without supervision.

I'm obviously the best driver here as I regularly down six packs and drive home, and I haven't even killed anybody yet..... no pedestrians or anything. Well there was that one dog but he looked like a stray anyway.

You must wear a seatbelt. Every time you strap in, you're betting against yourself. You're inviting disaster. If you feel the need to put a seatbelt on before you drive or even turn the engine on, you should not be allowed on the roads. You, seatbelts, and automatics are a threat to public safety. /thread

Well funny story here:
I was just on my way to my local mountain and got into an accident. The cop already told me it was not my fault in any way.

I was driving straight through a 4-way intersection while I had a green light. Somebody driving straight at me was going to be taking a left hand turn and crossing over my lane. Well I guess for some reason he did not see me and slammed into my drivers side door of my car. He did have a green light but the law states that when crossing over a lane as long as you don't have a green arrow (which he didn't) you must yield to oncoming traffic. I haven't gotten the estimate on the damage yet, whether it's totaled or not, but it's kinda in rough shape. We'll see how it goes.

It just sucks because even though it was 100% not my fault my insurance is still going to go up.

Dude you're 16, shut the fuck up. The fact that you don't know how people can be "a way better driver" than you proves that. Experience, experience, experience. I've been in three car accidents, one that was my fault because I didn't know how to prevent a car from becoming more out of control once it was already starting to be. There is SO much you don't know in this world.
