Goalkeeper attacked by hooligan.

Quite an interesting thing occurred last night which has stirred an incredible debate in my little country know as the Netherlands.
There was a football match between the famous Ajax and the less famous AZ.
Ajax was at 1-0 after a quick goal in the 10th minute, 20 minutes later something happened.

A hooligan managed to evade security and ran on the pitch.
He proceeded to run towards Esteban (AZ's goalie) and tried to hurt him.
Esteban reacted quickly and managed to tackle him.

So far so good, but then Esteban decided it was not enough, he ran after the hooligan and proceeded to kick him. He then had to be held by teammates because he was completely enraged.
According to the rules the referee had to give him red, and so the ref did, upon hearing this news AZ's trainer decided to walk off the field.

A lot of people are saying it's self defense, but a lot of people in the Netherlands are blinded by the love for their respective clubs.
What do you guys think about this?

Did you see the video OP linked to?

Because after he made the hooligan trip he went after him and kicked him.
The referee later said he gave the red card for kicking the downed hooligan.


I was there in the Arena last night, that Esteban was acting like an animal, blinded with pure rage.
I think it's the worst for everyone who payed good money to see that match.


It was self defence, until he started to kick hem when he was down.

if he didn't kick him when he was down im pretty sure he was on his way back up to start fighting

I don't know, the first kick may have even been warranted as a shock reaction, but the second kind of sealed the deal.

I wouldn't wanna be on the receiving end of that kick, but fuck that hooligan, what a bitch.

the guy was cowering on the floor kicking him is assault, red card is well warented. just because someone jumps at you dosent give you the right to kick them once or twice. his in air dodge was warrented but there was no need to run after him.

id like to see this taken more seriously by the law, just cause some idiot runs on the pitch dosent mean he needs to get kicked in the ribs, guy could easily have been seriously hurt.

I'm actually studying law over here in the Netherlands. And by law they are both punishable for battery.
The hooligan for the initial assualt, and then the keeper for the kicks afterwards.

Self-defense in the Netherlands registered under Article 41 of the Criminal Code. This article argues that the use of violence as "necessary defense of their own or another's person, honor or property from immediate, unlawful assault" is not punishable.

However the use of force is subject to subsidiarity and proportionality. In practice this means that violence is a last resort and that it should be impaired by the defense interest in reasonable proportion to the protected interest.

After the inital strike the keeper could have run away, but instead he ran towards the hooligan with the intent to use violence on him and so he did.



Not justifiying the actions of that hooligan at all, but the keeper was in the wrong and deserved that red card for the kicks.

people like you are just so sadly ignorant.

Soccer is probably one of the most difficult sports to be successful at, at a professional level, because of the high amount of skill and endurance that is involved. Just because it isn't a contact sport doesn't mean it's "gay". In fact, last time I check a sport couldn't have a sexual preference. Stop being a little fuck and carry on with your fapping to your favorite football/lacrosse/hockey team.

kicking him once he's down might be a little excessive...but the guy really brought it upon himself. You don't go onto a field without expecting to get your ass kicked, one way or another. Whether it's by the stadium staff or the players themselves, odds are you're going down hard

The GK just wanted to see what it was like to kick someone who is on the ground because GKs always get kicked on the ground when they go for the ball.

Really though, he should have hit him and kept him down. Red card uncalled for, the guy would have gotten up and hit him again.

Judging from your grammar and pure stupidity, I'm going to assume you're no older than 13, so please remove yourself from this thread before you embarrass yourself any further.

It was not self defense. Throwing him down to the ground was self defense. Kicking him twice when he should have run away...not self defense.

imagine your trying to do your job, a job which if you perform poorly could make you hated by thousands or even millions of people, and some random jackass tries to assault you and destroy your ability to perform your job. maybe the red card was necessary maybe it wasn't, but i'm pretty sure i would react the exact same way. wayyyy too much on the line to let some probably drunk jackass fuck it all up.

I don't see why he gets a red. The dude is completely unrelated to the game, I mean sure if it was someone from the other team I would understand it, but this guy isn't in the game, why are the actions against him related to the game?

The Dutch football asociation anounced the red card was 100% correct.
It was given for the kicks when they gay was laying down.


There is this rule that any player that physically attacks anything (player,referee, press, supporter.) they get a red.

i watched it and i see that he clearly could have run away. i've always walked away from people who want to rough me up during a game. Then again, i don't think i would have given him a red card for it.

speaking of soccer, i just went and played a few hour ago in a training jersey and shorts an nothing else. i.e. it's to warm out.

"Violent Conduct" can be against pretty much anything on or around the field. The red card was for sure warranted. I seen red cards given out for a player attacking his own teammates.

This... You can get a red card for purposely trying to cause bodily harm to anyone. One guy got a red for tripping some dumbass fan who was running across the pitch... Don't remember who it was, but you can find the video on YouTube.

personally I agree with the outcome so far, it made sense to me he got a red card, and just as much sense that the FA revoked the card in the end. I also agree with de Boer's comments that for all he knew, the guy was armed and might continue his attack. Hit him while he's down. If someone is stupid enough to run onto the pitch and attack, who knows what he's capable of, you gotta make a split second decision and defend yourself.
