Hey guys, I might be flying up to Tahoe area in the next few days, but it all depends on how much snow is there. I heard that they have poor snow coverage, but I wasn't sure. So how much snow is at the local ski areas around Tahoe?
Unfortunately very little. Other than a dusting last week it hasn't snowed at all in December, and there is no snow at least in the two week forecast.
So sad. Last year we were soooo spoiled with huge early season sierra dumps. This year all that's open at any resort is a groomer or two with some jibs set up, maybe a small park if you are lucky :( Not to say that we aren't skiing-even an hour or two messing around is a good time (over not skiing at all) but if you come out here it probably isn't worth buying tickets.
All the deep powda, man you got no ideas on the pow pow going down up in there. Getting deep in them tahoes, bacountry action like you aint neva seen my man.
I went the second or third opening weekend of boreal....I skied 5 inches of powder and the preseason conditions are currently better than what therw is now.
squaw's lack of effort doesn't extend to every resort in tahoe. boreal's rail garden is still really well done, and i'd go so far as to say that heavenly and northstar are killing it! both resorts have two pack jumplines that are real fun, as well as a shitload of full-size, well set-up rails. doing fantastic work with what we've got.
I agree, and while I am primarily a Squaw rider I have been to other resorts ;)
He was asking about how much snow there was, and there is very little, that's obvious. I do applaud our Tahoe resorts for making the best out of what they have and some of them, like you've mentioned, have done great work. Like I said, I'm still skiing and having fun, as are many other pass-holding skiers. However Tahoe is hurting economically right now because of the lack of snow, just ask anyone who lives up there and works in any sort of tourist-type industry-there have been a lot of cancellations for hotels and rentals and business is hardly booming compared to the norm for this time of year. And given how expensive tickets are, I wouldn't blame someone for changing their plans due to the lack of real snow, or at least waiting to come out to Tahoe until a good storm or two hits, especially if they aren't from the NorCal area.
seriously, you know me, i live here, i work in the tourist industry, my mountain is barely open and i probably won't get work till january. it sucks. my point was that if the OP likes to ride park, he can find surprisingly good midseason-ish conditions and dope setups at several resorts around the lake. wouldn't want to boo-hoo someone out of a tahoe trip right now just cuz there's no pow-da and a few places aren't working with what they've got. heav, northstar and boreal are all going off and definitely worth paying for... especially given the investment they've made to bring us such fantastic conditions in a so-far-snowless winter! wouldn't want to overlook that...!
