Anyone take java?

I'm about to embark into java. i have an option to do something else but they say this is actually useful. i sucked at basic and visual basic, but i hear java is way different. should i do it?

do it. I'm doing an independent study right now in java. So far I can't do crap and we don't have any of the files you need to make good programs. It's pretty similar to c++ if you've ever done anything with that.

lineskier, in case you didn't know, java and c++ aren't really graphics programs at all.

Java is more challenging than BASIC, but much more versatile and powerful if you know what you're doing. C++ is even more so, but even harder than Java. Basically, Java makes setting up classes, etc. very easy, and has some nice frameworks for data structures (hash tables, lists, etc.) and strings, and other stuff. There are no pointers like in C/C++, although everything is passed by reference anyway.

The problem with Java is that it's interpreted, which means that the code gets compiled as needed when your program is running, so it's incredibly slow and runs in a sandbox. That's why I prefer C++/Objective-C. But I do know Java too, and it's a good language for learning in... so go for it.

I honestly would try to leanr basic or visual basic first, when I was looking into learning one those two seemed the easiest and looked much more understandable. Plus every one says once once you learn one language the rest are so much easier, so it would probably make sense to start out with an easier one first. Just my opinion, but I do realize VB and BASIC have very little capabilities to make games and such.

^ it's not worth wasting your time on them, the syntax won't carry over to anything else and the languages are worthless. Any halfway intelligent human being can learn java...

yeah they do... I never even learned them, I went straight to C++ and it wasn't that hard to get into.

i didnt bother reading what everyone else said... But, i took java last year (like 180 days of it). It's 100% different than Vb and stuff like that. I'm not sure how useful Java itself is, but after learning java, it made learning web languages like PHP and javascript (basically the same thing as java) super easy. Like, i was able to pick up on PHP almost instantly, and PHP is SO useful. So id say defiently take it. It's much harder than VB but much more useful.

^^^^^ actually people are just now beginning to see how much java sucks. But anyway, Java's interpreted nature means that the more heavy duty applications like games, photoshop, office, OSes, etc. will always be written in C++ or another similar language because Java simply isn't powerful enough.

^ i don't understand? I am not saying java is the cure all, it has strengths and weaknesses like all other languages. But, tell me one thing you can't do with java?

My biggest complaint of java is the complexity of building a nice UI. But, if I have a web front-end, and java on the server, you won't find anything faster.
