i think its cat instinct because thats where their are supposed to pick them up by so they go still to not annoy the parent carrying them

When i had my first cats as a kid some stray mom rolled up to my sliding door carrying 2 little kittens in her mouth by the back of their neck like that, i thought she was trying to eat them. I think that kinda is just an instinct they have from being carried by their moms.
