Mounting FKS with a paper jig?

I'm swapping my FKS bindings from my Line Anthems to Scott Punishers, can i trace a paper jig from anthems and then tape it square onto the punishers to mount em up?  I'll be using the same boots...just trying to save 40 bucks.  I have access to the correct drill bit.

Using a square.  I'd grab a standard sheet of printer paper, tape it square over the binding less anthems, trace the holes, then tape the paper onto the Scotts and drill er up.  Pretty sure it would wind up crooked, I'm just curious if it is possible to do right somehow.  Thanks for the response.

It's possible.  People use paper jigs all the time. 
I would practice a shit-ton first though.


Have you ever drilled and mounted a pair of skis before?
Do you own a posidrive as well?

i have mounted skis before, but only with real jigs.  I would practice a lot on shit skis i have lying around.  sounds good, any thoughts on how to get it perfectly straight?

You can find paper jigs to download online.  Do that rather than tracing your current mount.  Make sure you check to see that your scale is correct after you print it out, otherwise your holes will be wrong.

Measure two or three times and then tape your template onto your skis.
Some drills have a bubble level in the handle to make sure that the drill is plumb.  This helps to ensure that your holes do not get drilled crooked.

I just got a pair of FKS 140's and they came with a sticker jig/template........maybe try and get a hold of one of those?

yeah at least use wood or something. it's pretty hard to keep the drill straight even with the bubble level.

paper jigs are easy just make sure to start your holes with a hammer and chizzle thing and remember that skis with metal use a different drill bit. also i eyeball out a duct tape drill bit stopper to not drill through the base. you might as well epoxy your binding screws in to.

I just mounted mine using the TGR paper jig...as long as you measure multiple times and are somewhat handy, you shouldn't have a problem.

I have used the paper jigs as well.. Then again I do have access to a drill press and all the proper tools/bits which makes things a lot easier.

I did the same thing with the TGR template. I practiced alot but ended up messing up and drilling an extra hole. I was lucky the extra hole was far enough away to not be a problem. Practice alot first, I'm still not sure if it's worth the $40. REI only charges $30 for mounts too and they do a good job.

I'll echo the same advise: take your time and measure till you're sick of measuring. Finding the center of the ski can be tricky; it is really easy to get off-center. That said, using the TGR paper template is pretty straight forward. I've mounted all my recent skis sans jig and they have worked great.

I've mounted tons of skis with a paper jig..no problems yet..ha.. just measure like 80 times..use a drill press.. or take them to rei.. legit mounts. sometimes they have discounts during their sales too..15$ mounts happen occasionally.

Paper jigging is the way to go. Just triple check everything and make sure you have the right tools/bit.

same here, plus it was like $10 for some reason... just make sure you tell the tech like 5 times if you want them mounted center or wherever you want them mounted. they always forget for some reason

Just mounted some Hellbents with FKS the other day using the paper jig from bindingfreedom.com

Triple-check your printer scaling if you're doing it this way.

Hardest bit was getting the exact (enough) centre to work from. Everything is made easier by using a nail or a punch to make a slight dent in the topsheet then use that to centre the paper jig.

A pair of calipers really helped triple-check things were where we wanted them to be as well.

Do you have a collared drillbit or some other way of ensuring you don't drill right through the ski?

They changed their prices everywhere, it's $40 for members and $50 for non-members. I spent way to much money having them mount 2 of my skis, would have done it on my own if I knew of the paper templates.

I mounted my fks with a paper jig just fine.
As someone said above, just start your holes with a hammer and chisel and they'll be fine

Here is a good video on how to use the paper templates. The video is from the guy who made all the templates on TGR. He isn't mounting fks but its all the same.

One of the maintenance threads up top has every jib in it. I mounted up some px 15's no problem, drilled first on a piece of wood, everything was perfect, drilled the skis and they are fine. Some of the holes were a tiny bit crooked but nothing detrimental. The skis are on their 3rd mount anyway so not a big deal of something happens. ONLY do it if you are confident in yourself.

I used golf tees with some wood glue. Put a dab of glue, hammered them in, snapped / sawed them off and hammered them down flush. If they were still poppin up a bit I sanded them down. Works perfectly. Topsheet gets roughed up but doesn't matter.

Its honestly not that hard, read the tgr thread on how to do it and refer to the video. The one thing i would recommend is to practice on a 2 by 4 a few times and having a drill with a built in level. (You can also get a crisscross level to attach to a drill that doesn't already have one)
