Choose your location carefully... also snowpack is important. If your 'quarry' (where you're sourcing your snow from for the jump) is epic blower pow you'll be digging for a long, long time. Try to find somewhere with a sweet landing but some naturally compacted snow nearby you can cut 'bricks' or blocks out of.
I always go with building a wall around the outline of the jump (back and 2 sides) out of good bricks then in-filling the middle with less compacted snow.
And don't skimp on the in-run, the best jump in the world is useless if you're backseat and sketchy because your in-run is off-camber and lumpy.
