Rap stereotypes and misunderstandings

I have heard so much bullshit on this site in terms of what people think abotu rap music it is just so upsetting I had to make a thread on it.
First there are people who say rap is gay and rip on it because all they take the time to listen to or consider before openign their mouths is the artists who don't even rap, who just release pre- packaged pop like shit they call rap so as to look thugish (murder inc. for example). I mean if you can actually say you have heard a wide sampling of the music and you really just hate rap itself then that is one thing, but at least consider what actually is rap before being all bitchy about it. I mean if I said I hated punk because I heard a blink 182 song and didnt like it and never listened to punk again but consider it gay anyways, there would be like 3000 of you flipping out over it, and rap is the same way.
The other thing is that there are these people trying to sound really hardcore liek you are into rap and all by saying you hate mainstream rap and all you listen to is some underground shit. Then you go and say that you like all these mainstream rappers. I mean how can you say that you hate mainstream and in the same sentence mention biggie and pac as some of your favorite artists. I mean biggie and pac are some of my favorite artists, but I don't try to be all counter culture because I realize that there are millions of people who love these guys, theyve sold milluions of records and are worshipepd years after they die by white suburban kids and black urban kids too. People who say mainstream rap is gay are just as bad as the first type because they are trying to pretend liek biggie is underground because he was an underground NY emcee before he went multi-platinum. I mean there are a lot of rappers who are mainstream and popular simply because they are the best out there and recognized for it plain simple. Of course you also have mainstream rappers like Cash Money who decided to start rapping with their money they made from selling coke and literally bought themselves popularity in the rap world.
I'm just saying people judge rap a lot more and more negatively than they do other music styles, so don't label it because each rapper si different and it is an incredibly varied music style that really cant even be grouped or labled. dont say you think all rap is gay, and dont say you think all mainstream is gay or whatever, just decide which indiv. groups or artists you liek and which you dont.

People need to recognize that everything mainstream isn't bad. Take Talib kweli and hi-tek for example. Or Wu-Tang. On every Wu C.d. there are tracks desinged to move units and there are tracks with thight production, ryhms and a message like I Can't Go To Sleep or Malcolm. There are some good rappers who do go platinum and you can't discredit them because they sell discs. You have to respect the pioneers like dre, not saying dre is a hip hop pioneer (like public enemy or boogie down prd.) but he did invent that whole west coast sound.

I agree. I listen to some mainstream rap, but I also listen to A LOT of rap that isn't mainstream. Rap is the only music that I really listen to. I just love the beats and rhymes. Dr dre did a lot for the rap industry, I wonder where rap would be without him? Rap rules...
peace out

this is what i wrote in response to the worst artist or whatever it was thread. it fits for this one as well.. so here ya go.
see, i agree that some of these artists don't have as much integrity as other acts, but i mean, how can u truly say that somebody 'sucks'? the whole point of music is doing something that you like, as well as something that the consumer will like. now, obviously how heavy u weigh the 2 will dictate the quality or authenticity of your music.. but after all, everybody likes different music, so there is always going to be the need for commercially successful bands as well as the 'underground' bands or whatever u want to call them. u don't have to like everything, but i myself really don't see the need for dissing all these acts. without them, everybody would be loving all the underground stuff that u guys cherish so much.. whatever it may be.

DAMN FUCKING RIGHT EVERYBODY!!! and i havent clarifyed myself when i knock on 'mainstream' stuff. its that 'prepackaged pop crap' that im indiscreetly referring to, shit like Nelly or Ludacris who dont really have roots in their underground scene. i could be wrong on these two examples though.

Yeah, listen to what you like. I like oldskool rap personally, and I don't like MOST of the newer stuff. I listen to pretty much all types of music and this happens in all genres not just rap. People don't give it a try or try to be counter culture. For me it is just if its sounds good, I listen!

who cares about their 'roots' just because their first CD made them popular doesn't mean you should hate on them.

i think rap genuinely sucks...it's not musical, it's just some guy goin off about his n*****s and bustin caps...it sucks
music was made to be musical, as in have something to it other than a guy talking and a beat...i'm not saying that every single rap song sucks, or that every single song that isnt rap is good, but generally that's what i think. rip me apart if you have to, but that's what i think

people can say the same things about punk . . .it's all a bunch of skinny loser whiny white kids with no musical talent playing the simplest 'melodies' whining about what losers they are. don't just go by stereotypes. there's a lot of good punk and there's a lot of god rap. you're free to your opinion but don't base it on stupid stereotypes.

PocketRocket, you haven't actually listened to rap if you think that. I have 1000+ rap songs, and I don't know what that talks about killing people and ni**ers (they might use that word, but it's one small part of the song). I think you should listen to some more rap and then re-think your opinion.

yeah...lots of my friends listen only to rap...and i've found maybe 3 songs i like...scooby snacks by the fun lovin criminals...some song by mary j blige (cant remember the name) and that 'hey, must be the money' song...other than that...i cant stand it..the only reason i ever listen to rap, or watch the videos, is to make fun of how stupid it is, and how gay they dress, and how full of themselves they are...and i've never heard a punk song complaining about how much of a looser the singer is

PocketRocket, look at how dumb punk rockers dress. Someone said it perfect before, they are a bunch of skinny white boys who have no friends and can hardly play a good beat. Punk rock sucks...all of it

emo is pretty loserish - singing about their feelings and how they got dumped and shit... not saying they are losers ('cause i like a lot of emo) but they are pretty much just complaining in their songs and wanting something they can't have.

I listen to what sounds good, its that simple. To me punk, rap, rock, ska, emo, jazz and classical are all equally cool in there own unique ways. Instead of bitch about what is better, just think we all have different taste in music, can't really argue by only using preference!

gdubs is right but just bc u sell a lot of records doesnt all of a sudden mean u suck like how gomer mentions ludacris..he made all of the tracks to his first cd without a contract or nething and 'back for the first time' had all of those tracks with only one added..yea i mean it not like ludacris is gonna ban all pop stations from playing his stuff bc no one would..i listen to underground rap too but u cant dis someone for making songs that people like
