Confederate Flag

ok so my friend got in trouble for wearing a shirt with the confederate flag of it. the vp says it's just like wearing a swastika shirt. i for some reason cannot beleive this, from what i heare the confederate flag does not mean any hate or racism. but thats why i'm asking you guys, cause there are a few smart people here who should know the meaning of the flag.

Yes it does. But nowadays it can be more associated with southern pride. But personally I think it's tasteless and I believe it does still have very strong racial and hate ties to it.

the confederate flag isn't necessarily a racist symbol. it represents the south's entire secession from the united states, which includes more reasoning than simple slavery. however, the connotations surrounding the flag in modern society are rather negative, and because of that, makes it rather distasteful to wear in public.

i don't think that the principal should be able to punish the kid for wearing it, but it all comes down to the school's dress code. either way, it's stupid to wear in school. you being on this site suggests that you aren't even from the southern region. even if this kid is southern, there are many more options of iconography he can wear to display his pride (perhaps a state flag). the confederate flag has just become a symbol for people to display how trashy they are anyway. classy people wouldn't think to wear it.

Really? You started two sentences with the word "But." "But nowadays it..." What does the "it" relate to? You are using "it" as your noun. Really? Your last sentence is very awkward. "...it does still have very strong racial and hate ties to it." This does not make sense. I believe you meant to say "The Southern flag still elicits feelings of racial injustice and hatred." Please learn to use correct grammar before attempting to correct the grammar of others.

You will find out in life their will be extremists for anything, just because a person wears a confederate flag t-shirt does not mean he or she supports your "rednecks that still think they are fighting the civil war" idea. I do agree though some people may find it offensive, but the principal's decision to make the student ditch the shirt might of been a bit over-done....probably could of just told him to not wear it to school again or something along the lines of that

im still confused on why everyone likes to sport that flag. its ugly as fuck, it represents the unintelligent half of our nation. and yea i would say that it does incite racial violence cause after all the civil war was about slavery and the only major difference between the confederacy and the union was slavery support

Not really. It's a school and the principal decided his shirt was inappropriate.

You can wear whatever you want when there isn't a dress code, but I would emphatically side with the principal on this one.

If I invited you to a formal dinner and told you to go home when you showed up in a jean jacket and leather chaps, would I be suppressing you? No, I'd be kicking you out because you dressed inappropriately and looked like an idiot. Same idea.

Idk anything about that but I'm pretty sure the skynhead movement stemmed from lynyrd skynyrd followers. The Confederate flag is decent evidence

No, skynheads got their name from the band. The band came first.


I mean they didn't create racism and the movement but they were the start of the name for the group. Sort of giving a face to the idea.


I like their music a lot but I can't stand racist people. I don't think I'll ever be able to go to one of their concerts just because I don't want to support that. Even if they aren't like that anymore.

if anyone thinks the civil war was fought over slavery, y'all need to brush up on that american history...what if someone wore a shirt with the missouri state flag on it. is that racist, since missouri is in the deep south where a lot of race crimes were committed? and also, the nazis systematically murdered millions of people. Every member of the confederacy was an american. just because someone took up arms for the confederacy doesnt mean they were necessarily racist. its more about culture and herritage, like when people catch shit for having sons of confederate veterans license plates. they were still american, no reason to dismiss them just because they fought for the losing side

i believe that the flag is a pride for the south and nothing more. when I look at the british flag i dont immediately think "war of 1812" i think, oh shit, its the british.

If you honestly think the confederate flag has nothing to do with slavery , in any form, you failed history. The south seceded from the United States, subsequently establishing their own flag, after the election of Abraham Lincoln. Abraham Lincoln, while not an abolitionist at the time believed in containing the spread of slavery. So under federal law the south was being restricted from spreading slavery into new territories. There were many heated historical events that lead up to the major dissent between the south and the Union, including slave rebellions and the Dred Scott case.
-South secedes in fear of Abraham Lincoln pushing back slavery and his policies regarding it.
-Civil war begins at Fort Sumter (or whatever)
-Lincoln originally viewed slavery as an evil, but he was not an abolitionist, he fought a war to unite the states.
-Following the Emancipation Proclamation, the civil war becomes a war on slavery.
Regardless of what you fucking see it as, it is connected, IN HISTORY, to the south's secession which was rooted in their desire to practice slavery free of Northern involvement.

I'm so done having to explain this shit to every person who wants to go around waving their "southern pride" dick in the air for all to see. You clearly don't know what the "pride" was rooted in if you don't see it connected to slavery.

I'm sure by modern standards, the flag as evolved to represent something else, but it still has meanings that many don't know when viewed through the scope of history.

Dixie was never used as a flag to represent the c.s.a. It was used by the army of Tennessee. The first national flag, the stars and bars, a completely different design (look it up), was the flag used to represent the c.s.a. And since you retards are to stupid to realize that this whole thread is now full of fuck. /thread
