My take on what you need to know about Re-mounting skis.

So based on the newschoolers community, when ever a question comes up in the forms asking about "Should I remount my skis?" or "Is remounting a ski a bad thing?", the most common response you see is "ITS GONNA MAKE EM BREAK!" or some form of that. Based on my philosophy, I personally believe that it is ok to remount skis, so long as you have a shop that you are sure knows how to correctly complete the task. This would mean that you are positive they will fill the old holes with some sort of strong epoxy and that (to be very sure the skis are fine) they will fill the old holes with hole plugs or rubber pegs. This being said, I would go to your shop owner and have him remount your skis while you are standing right there if possible. This is what I did and I was 100% sure he put the epoxy in the old holes along with the rubber pegs. I feel that if the shop will not fill your old holes with epoxy, THEN it is not worth remounting your skis.

Another quick suggestion is when you are remounting, get some tape and label on your skis EXACTLY where you want them mounted for sure. By doing this, there is no way for the people mounting your skis to screw up. This would mean, taking a tape-measurement of the skis and marking precisely where you want the skis mounted.

Note: This is just my idea of the concept. I know that many may disagree but now I feel strongly about this. Leave comments or any feelings below. Thanks guys.

yessir ive done it with 2 skis now, havent hurt the first, and havent hurt the second, 100% perfect

please dont bump a thread in gear talk which is a repost.


most people know that remounting a ski isnt going to break it, however there are stupid people on ns who believe the trolls, and there are the people who think they need to centermount their park skis, because gus kentworthy does it and he loves it!





please people do not remount your skis because they are at -2.5 and you think you need a true center mount on park skis.

also:
is 3.5mm the write width for the drill bit?
how deep? does it vary, or is there a consensus on hole depth for most skis?
do i have to use those plug things to fill the old holes? or will just filling them with epoxy do the trick?

i know there are plenty of people on here with the knowledge to answer these questions. helpful questions for people who know what theyre talking about would be much appreciated

It depends on the location of the bindings. Scenario: If your changing your bindings, same boot, and you wan't to put them in the same location, you won't be able too because the holes will be too close/overlap. Most shops won't mount if its not safe, since they are liable if anything goes wrong.

The general rule is that skis are good up to 3 mounts.

1) yes that is the most common width
2) sometimes it is written on skis, my armadas say: Drill 3.5/4.1 x 9.5
3) it can vary but not by much, it depends really on the width of the ski on where to drill but hole depth is pretty universal.
4) epoxy should be fine, but hole plugs do help. it just prevents water damage in the longrun.

alrite thanks man +k. but youre armadas say two different bit widths? im just gonna use 3.5x9mm bit. and im gonna go ahead and buy plugs to be safe

You genrally use 3.6 for wood core skis and foam, and 4.1 for skis with metal in.

9mm to 9.5mm is the adult standard. 8mm is the standard for kids skis.

Yes you need to fill the old holes. You do not need to use expoxy, binding glue and a hole plug will work fine, all the glue does is ensure it is sealed but hammering in teh plug correctly is the most inportant part.

I have had skis rmounted 5 times and its fine. The holes just have to be far enough apart. If a remount is done wrong then yeah 1 remount may damage the ski, but if done right you can remount alot.

Overall though take them to a shop, and do not do as the OP said. The owner usally will not be the best tech, and do not stand watching, its the most annoying thing ever and will garentee you pay twice as much for the mount.

so if i were to remount my skis to true center from -1.5 cm back would it make my skis a tiny bit weaker

^WOW. And wow to this whole fucking thread. The OP was just asking about moving his skis from -2.5 to center and he did and it was a waste. Now he's giving advice on drilling, depth, and remounting. Great. And snlo wants to move his even less after he returned the scratch's he was raving about. ONLY ON NEWSCHOOLERS. Love/hate relationship. Follow the masses.

Not sure what this thread is even saying.

Remounting facts:
1) A remount will weaken your skis. More holes = weaker.
2) One or two well spread remounts should be ok, but if you have a bad landing the ski is more likely to snap along the old mount holes than it would be with no other holes.
3) It can be worth remounting if your ski isn't behaving the way you'd like at its current mounting point, ski them first and see. Its a cost/benefit situation. If the performance is improved by enough to justify weakening your ski, then do it.
