high moment here but what if, we had to abandon Earth, and like you and your family would get on a giagantic ship, live your life, die, have kids, etc. go through a couple generations and BAM your on that planet to start another world.

Time travel can work like this according to the discovery channel:


The speed of light is impossible to break, so what happens if you are on a train and are going 99.99% the speed of light and run on the train? 99.99%(speed of train) + 1% From running on the train would break it wouldn't it(ex: if you run down a school bus aisle while it is moving, you are going faster than the bus)? Well to protect the barrier time slows down for you so your 1% running isn't 1%, thus protecting the barrier.

The hadron collider or w/e it is called proved this by finding subatomic particles acted different near the speed of light.


Like someone said before it would not feel like 600 years to those traveling, but it would be to those not traveling.

Hopefully this offers a simple explanation, I recommend watching Stephen Hawkings into the universe if you want to learn more about this stuff.

I also have a question for people that are big on this subject...since it is possible we could zoom (for lack of a better word) in on the planet enough to scan for any life?

I don't know a lot about this so I might be wrong. I believe the only way we will detect life with our current technology is by scanning the planet for organic emissions in the atmosphere. We can find these I think by reading light waves or something like that. Basically, I think we would just be looking for bacteria fart gas in the clouds. I am fairly confident we don't have the means to visually zoom in on something so far away, and even if we could i'm sure we would have to be able to see through the atmosphere.

light years are a measurement of distance!

and it's safe to assume that if there is life there today, there would have been life 600 years ago.

In our lifetime, the only way we will ever know if there is intelligent life there is if they have been sending out a signal for over 600 years that we pick up!

And yeah thats what i was trying to point out. That theres a huge time lag in information received, from distant bodies.
