As One nerdy as said its all really the footbed. If your medial arch and the lateral arch collaspe then the foot extends. This will mean your toes hit the end. A good footbed suports the archs of your foot to stop it changing size under weight. A good thing to do is sit down so your foot just barly touches the floor. Put somthing at the end of your toe. Now stand up with all your weight on the foot and see how far the thing you put by your toe moves. This happens in boots under impact and also can be made worse by landing backseat. A good footbed therefor is essential, and then yes if your foot fits an SPK you are even luckier as they have the Goo toe which is just awsome, and should definatly be in more boots.
Funny, I got ridiculous toe bang this year and it has made me a better skier. Now I always press my shins and charge more so it doesn't get hurt again, which is actually helping my skiing in general
