Need help buying a camera. Canon Rebel?

which camera would be better for making edits/ taking pictures of skiing and snowboarding i don't know much about taking videos but would like to learn whats the better choice to buy as a first "real" camera

i really don't want to spend more than the high 600s.

i mean you only have 400... posts which isnt too much but ok hahha. But yeah as someone else said. you need like 1k plus minimum for a dslr setup

t2i but if you want to film you'll need some stabilization (tripod,glide cam, etc.), extra batteries, sd cards and maybe a mic.

so t2i kit $575
manfrotto 701hdv $225
batteries $60
sd cards (2x transcend class 10 16gb0 $40

total = $900 minimum


the kit lens isnt great though so it might be worth getting the tamron 17-50 non-vc instead.

part of this is true. but the kit lens in shit IMO. 900 is pushing it. i would say you would at least need 1200 to have a decent DSLR filming setup.
t2i:575 dollars
tamron 17-50: 350 bucks
manfrotto 701/055 XB legs: 230 after rebate
2 16gb class 10 memory cards: 50 bucks
a few 3rd part batteries: 20 bucks


at thats just getting the glimpse of it. next comes a glidecam, 50mm, filters, slider, UWA, telephoto, ect. it never ends. so unless you want to get serious into filming and have some $, it would be a wise choice to not get a DSLR.

He doesn't need the tamron right away. He can get away with the kit lens and if he only wants to make a few edits a year and mainly take pictures glide cam is a little unnecessary. besides that you are pretty much right. $900 is bare minimum. $1500-$2000 will get you everything you need.

True statement i think ive spent around 2100$ on my dslr in total, i'm not even close to having a full set up, and thats not including my stabilzation, i have a glidecam and a libec ls22

i guess your right. if you arent to serious into filming i really really reccomend not getting a t2i or any other dslr in that matter. if your just going to use a camera to make little fun half ass'd edits, then get a tm700. a t2i and kit lens without any stablization or any other glass would just be stupid

I wouldn't say it would be stupid, I would say it wouldn't be quite as ideal. For a beginner a Tm700 would make descent edits, but it wouldn't take much skill. Where as a begginer with a T2i and kit lens would most likely make crap, in the long run learning the in and outs of a camera. They will have more experience and knowledge for whatever camera he/she purchases next.

t2i are  nice but your gonna need to know how to film with a dslr you gonna need to have a variety of lenses and some sort of stabilazation

I think if you're looking to mainly do photos just pick up a t2i kit used and then work on building up a good video setup if thats something you really want to do.


How much video vs photo are you planing to do?

i somewhat agree with this, but no matter how much knowledge you have with it, it still wont be good if your just gonna have the body and the kit lens. if you were gonna put money into it, by all means its a great idea. but if your just doing it for fun, i just think it would not be the way to go. seeing a DSLR without a tripod or glidecam(or gyro or flycam) just looks terrible IMO. t2i's are also known greatly for rolling shutter, and having no stabilization would only make it worse.

OP if your going to be taking pictures, and you want them to be decent, your going to need a DSLR. but if your strictly basing it off of filming, i would stay away from it. save up some more money then buy a t2i and go from there, but just from 600 bucks, theres really nothing to work with.

This. T2i is fine to learn photography on, rebels are super easy to learn on. I started on an XSi with a kit and then expanded to my 60d and L glass. A Canon t2i (used), 18-55IS, and a 50 f1.8 would be a great learning setup. Maybe get a polarizing filter of light ND if you can, their helpful for snow, but you get really specific with those and quite frankly a lot of cheaper ones with reck your image quality.

you dont need 1k to film with a dslr..
i dont get why people say this ever.
I spent like 600..got a t2i body..
decent tripod at a second hand store..
and a few primes at pawn shops..
you can do it fairly cheap..just probably not as well

t2i body is like at least 500
decent tripod at second hand store like at least $150
there's no way you got all that for $600 considering the body alone is around 600 usually.
imo the cheapest way to film with a t2i is:
-t2i
-701/190 tripod
-18-200

if you really need 1 lens, then yeah thats the way to go on a budget. it still looks like shit IMO, but will do the job. even with the t2i, 18-200, and 701, he will still be far from over. i mean you need a few memory card. theres 50 bucks. mabye a DIY figrig. theres 50 bucks.filters- another 50. technically you could film with the 18-200 and the t2i, but i dont see what the problem is settling for a tm700. in many cases it looks just as good if not better. its cheaper and has a fixed lens. people need to get off the hype train of a t2i.

For video a go-pro might be better, you don't need all the stabilization/mics to get a good shot, just point and shoot. As for photos, if video is taken care of by a go-pro, i'd recommend a used 30d or 40d. They go for about $400 and $500 respectfully. A used 18-55IS is like $100. And thats a banger setup to get started. The D series is much more powerful than the rebel.

That setup would cost less than a t2i + necessary accessories to get banger video.

ohh okay, sorry, didnt read your post properly.

but OP, please do not listen to anyone that says get a DSLR. if you really want decent pictures, then yeah you need one. but there are plenty of camcorders out there that will fit you much better for strictly video.
