Question for you Football players...

I am currently a sophomore at Mayo High School (not relevant). I am seriously considering going out for football next year, and was wondering if there was anything that I need to know. I played football from 4th-8th grade, and then broke my collarbone and was done. So yeah, any FYI's that I should be aware of before signing up for High School Football?

also, high school football is a cult. as was mentioned above, you will be initiated. initiation usually includes some sort of hazing or embarrassment and the coach usually will not stick up for you unless it's something really fucked up. you probably will be looked down upon if you leave the team at any point. it's a commitment, at most schools anyway.

football players in highschool are a lot bigger than middle school.  I'm assuming varsity because you'll be a junior so, you better start working out and be ready.

I'm only 5'10 and weigh about 155-160 lbs, but I never quit going, no matter how hard I get hit, it was the same in hockey. But yeah

Honestly, as much as everyone is suggesting lifting weights and as important as it is, i would suggest agility drills.

Watch as much football as possible and start talking your coaches, as much as football is a contact sport it is also a knowledge sport, but seeing as you've played before you should pick it up easily.

So yeah hit the weight room, agility drills and get caught up with the coaches/ playbooks.

KEEP YOUR MOTHER FUCKING HEAD UP! I tried out, Made my high school team and then quit because the coaches are assholes but the few practices I went to I made sure to get my fucking chin up or else it was going to hurt. I'm 5'8 160lbs and work out 5 times and a week and some of those older kids can really fucking hit hard. Im more of a lacrosse player so its not my kind of game but damn, nothing worse then getting blind sided.. oh and I'm drunk right now sooo... fuck yea.

you only get so many years to be able to legally hit people as hard as you can, throw your body around with reckless disregard, and be a hero in front of thousands of people.

if you play with caution you will get hurt. Play hard and trust your athletic abilities.


That shit is waaay too much fun, so remember to have fun and dont get caught up in "seriousness" of games. Just go out, hit some one, knock em on their ass and then celebrate with your boys.


Oh and dont play QB. play a position with less thinking and more reacting.


And the injury thing is super over rated. at the high school level the rate of concussions is waaaay lower than colleg and NFL because the players are so much slower, smaller, and weaker. its probly waay less dangerous than skiing.

amateur level sports for every age. i am 23 and just started football and can play until i am 50 or what.

maybe a reason for the, lets called it chubbyness in the us.

I was the same size, you will be fine in the secondary, i played both safeties. you don't have to make that many 1 on 1 head on tackles if you're worried about getting hit. you get to drill running backs who are already tangled up, get to drill receivers who don't know whats coming, rip people down from behind, and if a full back or something breaks free your position gives have a ton of time to prepare and go low on him so you don't get steam rolled. you have to be able to get them down somehow since you're the last line, but brute force and size doesn't play as much of a role as it does for linebackers then obviously even more for linemen.

basically, the further you line up from the ball (on either offense or defense) the less size/stregnth has to do with it and the more speed/agility/timing is involved

as far as hazing, idk we never did any gay shit just extra drills and getting hit harder than expected

Don't pass up the opportunity, you'll regret it. Nothing like the feeling of going out on a friday night to play football and fuck someone up, best feeling in the world. I miss it so much i'm getting chills just talking about it.

Different story for me though, i was 6 foot 205 pounds in highschool and i was an inside line backer. nothing beats making a runningback your bitch.

dont hit people, run through them

cardio goes a long way, so get in shape. get used to running and doing wind sprints. shit will make you an infinitely better athlete in the long run.

shit, i would rate that as one of the better things about society if it happened over here. Its healthy, social, and keeps the body, mind, and spirit fresh and vibrant.

you have no idea how much you will miss it till its gone. now i just ski, and play pickup basketball...not the same.

i just dont get it that you guys dont have it. like here its pretty normal for a lot of people to play competitively soccer until they are 35 or so.

of course its not a high level, but as you said, you stay healthy, meet friends and challenge yourself in a team.

football is becoming a big thing in austria right now. were probably the best nation in europe. but its really the same for all sports, i could start like 15 different team sports right now and play at an amateur level and compete.

damn dude this. you will regret not doing it. i'm a junior, and i wish i had started playing football freshman year. now i want to try out senior year, but i don't think i could get in, just because everyone has been playing for 4 years now. i have the body type, (6-4, 200) but i don't have the experience. i might try to talk to the coach or something.

ok your really small, so idk. but as i said, i play for the 2nd team of one of the best teams in europe (would probably a NCAA II or III) team) and we practice with the ones and are actually the scout O/D for them. and also scout ST.

i am a WR, 6'2" 187 lbs and although i never played before, if you know how to protect yourself and how to move every muscle in the direction you want, i am not afraid to go to the training of the ones. sure its not full speed, but still, get your head and shoulders down and chances are pretty big that you wont even feel whatever was standing there.

seriously, i am not looking very stable since i have kinda skinny forearms and once i was in a scout punting formation that had gunners on the LOS split out wide and kind of three personal protectors standing halfway between the punter and the LOS. and this DE, one of the best in europe, just tries to run through me with a solid 6-7 yds inrun. i am not saying that i could stop him, but i put my head down and although he pushed me back, it didnt end that bad at all.

i am not trying to claim some bullshit since i never played except for mop-up duties in a league 1 game and in the final minutes of a blowout in a league 2 game. i just say that even people that always get called skinny can play it and regular hits are not that big of a deal.

you wont regret it you will get in such better shape and its such a fun game, the practices arent always the funest but the games are worth it. make sure you pay attention and go your hardest so you can actually start

height and weight don't mean shit if you try as hard as you can dude, im 5-9 180 and i started d-end gave plenty of concussions, i shut down a UCONN committed RB dude, all im sayin is try your ass off and youll be good, and don't whine about lil aches and pains, it's football

obviously there are different requirements. as long as your over 120 lbs, you can make up alot with effort. especially as a WR.

speed and hands are way more important imo. of course its great to have a bigger frame. i now almost completed for the first time the team offseason workout (here the season is in spring) and its nice. i feel a lot stronger and safer.

before i joined, i did two months of P90X and i think it helped me. maybe you can download it on a certain site and get in a little better shape without a gym and shit.

Do it. You won't regret it. At times it might suck, but overall it's worth it, and never again will you have the opportunity to put on pads and play.
I finished up my senior season a few weeks ago, weird to look back on it now that it's done.

Also, I know a bunch of people at mayo

I would say definitely go for it. There's nothing like it, nothing. Highschool football is so fun. Just be excited ready to learn, and realize that high school football is a fast game and every year it gets faster and faster and more fun. You got a couple years and you will only get better. Honestly push yourself as hard as you can every practice, be sore, have bruises, get laid out. It's all fun man. It's really what you make of it. Have fun, I miss it so much
