Designing a line of skis

For my final project for art, my teacher and I decided on painting some designs for skis.

But Im going to take this a step further, seeing how he also wants this displayed for a show, and also at shows that he goes to. So im going to actually make "blank" skis out of wood for now, for the paintings to go on. A pair of fat powder skis, all mountain skis, and some park skis, all with tip/tail rise, and all real life dimensions, maybe even mount a pair of bindings on one of them.

He also suggested sending them into some company's, or try to promote them in some way! So I figured give newschoolers a shout and see what you guys think.

I started doing some quick paintings to get ideas of what I want. I really like some of Eric Pollards art, and he definitely inspires me on some level for my paintings. Im still trying to think of some ideas on what would look sick on each pair so of course ideas are welcome! I dont have any pictures yet, but I will soon!

Not literally a ski with edges or any function like a real ski has, I mean just wooden "blanks", these are just for displaying the designs , instead of doing them on sheets of paper.

why dont you try and contact pollard, see if he can help you out, it is a long shot but you never know.

and I think you should just start designing things you like, but draw/paint them out on paper first. once you like what you get, then shrink it down and only keep the really good parts or make it simpler and fit it on a pair of skis. hope that helped too.

i dont know how much you are willing to spend but some companies will make you skis with your own custom graphics, 333, and folsom to name a couple. then you could actually ski them after.

Why don't you just paint a ski white so it doesn't look as terribly aborted for something you're going to display.

But yes real skis are a little out of the budget, and I was thinking about taking an old pair of chronics and paint them, but I want to do three sets- powder, park, and maybe an all mountain ski!

Our artists paint on large boards of plywood, in a big 18" by 90" sorta canvas. When its done, you can run it to a photo studio and take a sweet picture. Ours come out higher quality than our printers can actually sublimate onto our tops, but they come out looking good. PM me if you want to get your art onto some skis, I'm always looking for cool side projects to get involved with now that we're mostly done with production and orders.

For your project, I'd make something like this and then overlay a template shape of a ski over it - for the template, you'll probably be best to trace an existing ski you have or CNC out a shape out of thin MDF or something cheap.

Oh yes thats perfect, sorta what I had in mind! I actually have access to CNC's at work, but I think im going to just trace and cut with a jig saw I have for the templates.

Do you know if they still have that contest going on? I know they used to but im sure the deadlines are over.

Or it could be sick to line up the blank skis and create a sort of like ski mural...so get Like 6 skis and line them up so it's like a blank canvas..that'd be tight

There was a K2 one for designing, but not physical designs, just through computer but that one is in the in the semi or finals not sure, there was a thread about it. But there will most likely be one next year.
