The description of Europe in Yearbook is just so spot on.

Like The one year i spent in whistler I hated having to worry about where i skied in the actually boundary. Some of the best ski terrain off peak chair was "permanently closed"

European ski patrolers are freeriders themselves (one of our local patrollers used to be in the freerideworldtour) and they just applaud you if you pull off a sick line that no one would normally do.

They actually trust people to have judgement. And it is for that, I do not mind waiting for the snow(even if we do have greenfields right now)

If US resorts ran like that the amount of Avy related deaths would triple Utah alone would probably be more than the rest of the country combined.

The amount of snow, and frequency here in Utah makes is really sketchy pretty often.

All the good stuff is roped of because in the us somebody would sue the mountain for allowing them on that terrain. I'd assume that would generate an insurance issue if it remained open so they just close it.

Not sure about europe, but it sounds like they say we think you have some amount of judgement, if you try and get wrecked, it's your fault not ours. And the law is on our side, so you can't sue us.

Exactly, It's like "if your willing to take the risk, its your own fault" for sure the whole modern day law suit mentality is ruining american resorts.

But for example, I dont know of any people who do even slack country with out avy gear.

Yet in the states you guys hardly where avy gear. It's stupid.
It's not an expensive investment.

Sure we get deaths in avalanches. We don't need the quantities of snow here to make it just as deadly due to steepness. Fact of the matter is I think more people respect the mountain over here.

it's like this because if somebody dies for doing something stupid in north america then their families try to sue the shit out of the resort.

europeans don't have this issue because i don't know, they have more common sense i guess. both the skiers and the resort/patrol. but i don't really know what goes on over there, i've never been.

so basically a bunch of pissy sue happy gapers ruined it for the rest of north america with their trying to get money because somebody they know did something retarded. fuck, i'm not even allowed to hit side-booters at my local hill cause so many fat fucking 10 year old snowboarders eat shit all the time and break their wrists.

that's what I think.

Hopefully Europe stays like this... Nobody said shit to me when I bootpacked up to places which were "guide only" routes.. As long as you don't endanger anyone else they don't mind what you do as long as you know it's on your own back if something happens.

No one in Europe, especially where I live, in Austria, would even consider to sue a mountain if he gets hurt. This seems to be very very American to sue everyone and everything for own faults IMO

Pretty much the only way you'll catch flak in Europe is if you're trying to ski an avy-prone slope that's directly above a piste. A few weeks ago I got called out by a liftie as I was getting ready to hike a nice little minigolf line that happened to be above a well-frequented cat track. I knew it wasn't going to slide, but I understood where he was coming from so I found another slope to hike.

Most European ski resorts don't even have a "boundary" concept. The ski area is responsible for providing a safe piste to ski on. Once you're off of the groomed slope, anything goes: crevasses, cliffs, closeout lines, you name it. When you leave the groomer, you're on your own, and nobody's going to stop you from going where you want. In Germany you actually have a legal right to go wherever you want in the mountains, except for specifically closed areas such as wildlife protection zones or avalanche slopes above a populated area.

I worked at a very big, touristy glacier ski area in Austria last year, and every week I saw people getting pulled out of crevasses within 100 meters of a groomed slope.

Oh yes I forgot the wildlife protection zones. those are really the only areas where you shouldn't ride. But it is also not prohibited there, just recommended.
