But for real be careful. I know you can never get there soon enough, but if the roads are bad take your time. Better to get there a few minutes later than slide off the road and not make it at all. Especially any of you who just got your licenses recently, don't be afraid to take your time and drive safely. Also make sure the driver is good to go on the way home. After an early morning, and a long day of skiing people get tired. Make sure you have somebody driving that can make it home without falling asleep. A good day can turn into a really shitty one if you're not careful.
I was lucky to only have one minor incident last season. Lady goes speeding down road where it's hard to see streets. She blast through a corner right before the intersection we pulled out of. We clip the back of her car sending her into a fishtail. Her car goes straight up a snow bank and almost flips on it's back. Oh yeah she was pregnant, with a one year old in the back.
Ahh I feel like an ass for laughing at that. But on a serious note, I'm glad the words being put out for safe driving. I slid off the road last year and I thought I was even going slower than I needed to.
fuck i lost it at the verticle car i would love to see someone try and push it over, but that reminds me when it was icy and my driver was a little tipsy scary as hell
I strongly suggest that any new drivers find an empty snow covered parking lot and mess around until you feel comfortable power steering a skid, doing doughnuts, and e brake 180's. My kids won't be allowed to drive in the snow until we have done that.
You can read about or learn how to do any maneuver in a car, but until you've actually done it, you won't have really learned it. It's all about getting a good feel for what your car will do when you try something.
And just play around with it. See what happens when you do certain things. Slam on the brakes, cut the wheel, and so on.
actually I'm looking forward to a good snow so i can hit up a parking lot and practice up a bit. I've been driving for years but what harm can a little refresher do?
This, I'm from a much snowier area than my girlfriend and she's always impressed with how well I can handle poor driving conditions. I owe it all to fooling around in empty parking lots and what not so last winter I forced her to take her car to an empty parking lot and just mess around until she got a better feeling for it. She said it was really helpful.
this. Its so important to know how your car reacts to certain conditions, dirt snow etc. I know my car like the back of my hand and how it reacts makes certain maneuvers and situations muche asier to handle. The ebrake is so under rated in emergency situations. I was on black ice sliding about 20 ft from a car was probably going to hit it so i ripped the ebrake and turned onto the sidewalk. Looked like an idiot but still saved my ass
When I was 16 my parents wouldn't let me skip school to get my permit. I got lucky and within a week we had schools closed for a nasty freezing rain storm. Freezing rain was about the only reason schools ever closed where I live, snow was nbd.
So I took my test and got my permit. Get home and I'm just sitting there playing ps2. My dad was like, what, are you gonna sit their all day or come driving? I was like huh? S I'm driving down the road in the freezing rain. Also driving a fucking minivan so it handles like shit. Sketchy way to learn.
tl;dr cool story
I like your idea the best. Trial and error on the road when you don't know how to drive can end poorly. I def wouldn't let my kids drive my car in the snow without messing around in it a little bit.
There was another bad accident right near me a couple days ago. A kid was doing 100 passing 2 cars went into an intersection, hit a ditch, jumped a drunk and got wedge between the truck and the house.
The kid in the passengers seat was only 19 and was pronounced dead on scene, his sister was thrown out of the back window and is in critical condition still, and the driver is fine with a couple bruises.
Be careful out there guys. I know you can't dwell on bad shit all the time but def think about things. Nobody ever goes into these situations thinking anything bad will happen. Be careful on the roads, especially those of you who just got your licenses.
Just to point out something that people may not think of.
say you're driving in a 100km/hour (60mph) going 120 km/h, if you're driving 100 km, you're only getting there 10 minutes quicker. So driving significantly over the speed limit really does nothing to your actual time.
Especially the ones who just got there license recently. Be careful out there! Seriously. It's fun, you're heading to the mountain with all your friends and you want to get there quick to shred.
Be careful. It's not worth crashing. Even if everybody is fine, nobody likes to have to shovel a car out of the ditch while other people are tearing up the early morning powder.
