Last year to hit Chad's Gap and Pyramid

Just thought I'd let you all know that if you've ever dreamed of hitting Chad's Gap or Pyramid Gap, it sounds like this is the last year that you'll be able to do so.  Alta will be putting a lift up grizzly gulch next summer.  Just got back from a very interesting meeting with the 7 central wasatch GMs........

MASSIVE LAND GRAB going down all brought about by the canyons pushing for a lift connecting them to solitude and snowbird expanding into mary ellen gulch.  kiss 50% of the backcountry in the wasatch goodbye.

The whole ski town rumor about "having to close in April due to permits" is not true whatsoever. Conditional use permits make no qualifications about schedule of use or length of season. None whatsoever.

alta leases the land from the forest service. they only own the lifts. a lot of skis areas operate this way.

A conditional use permit. Most ski resorts, with several prominent outliers excluded (i.e. Schweitzer), are located on USFS land. The idea is that resorts contribute to economic growth and revitalization. The trade over is the loss of wildlife habitat, environmental issues, backcountry regulations, snow and water management, among other things. The USFS does get lease payments based off of your ticket price. The amount is small, however, likely around $5 off of a typical Colorado-priced ticket.

I'm way less worried about chads than I am the whole grizzly area. it's beautiful back there, both for skiing and for hiking I the summer, which, while still possible, would not be the same with a chairlift above. occupy grizzly gulch!

years away???  hahahaha try this upcoming summer dood!!!  Let me point out a few happenings that are going on right now.......  (without going into details of what was said at this meeting yesterday)

Talisker wants that lift badly for the canyons, they have legislation requiring the FS to sell land to them so they can connect the canyons to solitude.  some think they just start construction regardless next summer and deal with the consequences later.

snowbird is going to expand into Mary Ellen gulch. that's pretty much a done deal.....  well maybe not since they're not bypassing the FS process like talisker.

combine these two factors and every other ski area in the central wasatch will be making a land grab, all with the new precedent set by Talisker that bypasses the SL County watershed authority and the FS process that has been in place for over a hundred years to protect the water supply for up to 1 million people.

NEXT: Did you hike up grizzly gulch this year? they were surveying land up there and grading areas to put a lift in.  also, they've been talking to doppelmeyer and i'm pretty sure the order was made for a lift.

it'll happen really fast, trust me.  you can be a naysayer and sit your head in the ground or you can be proactive.........  write/call/email/text your congressman and tell them how you feel, tell your friends/coworkers/parents about what is happening, fight the POWER!

ok I should re-state that to 50% of the backcountry of the central wasatch.  the area of the wasatch surrounding SLC and PC.

 I'm also going to differ between backcountry and sidecountry because they are very different.  sidecountry areas see much more traffic, so if adding a lift creates a new easier accessed sidecountry area, I consider that a lose of backcountry.  I don't necessarily consider the experience of skiing rocky point or wolvy (sidecountry) the same as skiing the needle (backcountry) and i think this is fair. 

let me show you.......

Canyons to Solitude:  this knocks out bear trap fork, mill d north fork, usa bowl, etc......  that's all now sidecountry, but this will be skied even more than now because you don't have to hike out.

Snowbird mary ellen gulch expansion: obviously you lose mary ellen, not a super big deal as its difficult to get in there, but now that lift will probably make access super easy into white pine.

Now these two events will probably result in....

PCMR to brighton:  loss of 10420, guardsman area.

Alta expands into grizzly (a sure bet regardless).  bye bye chads.

solitude expands into silver fork and to the top of grizzly/fantasy ridge (probably a sure bet regardless).  increasing ease of access into days fork and silver fork.

Alta also has shown interest in putting a lift up flagstaff.  That would knock out emma ridge, days, cardiff, superior, monte cristo......

So that's a loss of bear trap, mill d north, usa bowl, 10420, guardsman, grizzly gulch, emma ridge, silver, days, cardiff forks, superior s. face, monte cristo south side, white pine, mary ellen gulch.....  I'd estimate that's about 50% of the central wasatch.  sure you'll still be able to walk up days/silver/cardiff from BCC but now you're competing with a lift and helicopters (remember that's a prime heli zone).

and before you tell me how awesome this will be, just remember that you can hike all these areas anywhere from 45 minutes to 3 hours as it currently is.....  pretty amazing access already and these areas are already crowded with backcountry skiers and most of the land is PUBLIC, forest service land and serves as a protected watershed for a million+ people.

because there are tons of backcountry skiers that can enjoy these areas for free. soon they will be bumped out and sold for profits and life will be forever different. these are also places for people to easily escape the grind of salt lake city. but soon the wasatch will be salt lake city'd. who knows next u might see a walmart and super target pop up in bcc.

It would be cool if they made a new ski run where you could ski over/beside chads gap, and once a year they built the jump for pros to hit. this would be an acceptable compromise

I don't have to prove shit to you dude, it doesn't matter where i have or have not toured, that only distracts from the fact that the interconnect will change the central wasatch forever! and for the worse NOT better. 
you know why there's more touring traffic in the upper canyons???  cause the snow is deeper and the access better, that's, shorter hikes, quicker laps..... 

AND what's "the npc"? never heard that one.

you can call me chicken little all you want old man, but I have first hand knowledge that the resorts are chomping at the bit to make this happen.  canyons to solitude, alta into grizzly and snowbird into mary ellen are the first to go......

shouldn't you be rehabbing that shoulder instead of sitting on your ass and getting fatter, talkin smack on the interwebz???

And I havent been closer than 5000 miles to Kirra Point which was one of, if not the best point break in the world but developers don't give a shit, all they care about is $$$$$$, which is why I, nor anyone else, will ever surf it again

how does the new lift from the can to solitude make anything at the canyons sidecountry easier to access??  won't the lift be a straight shot from the canyons to solitude ?  therefore, it shouldn't be making it any easier to existing canyons side country, correct?

i thought that ALTA owns MOST of the skiable acreage at the current resort but the USFS has a lien of sorts on the property to allow the migration of animals through the land since the USFS owns a large portion of the surrounding property (excluding GG)

Chads is great and all..but until you have seen the entirety of Grizzly Gulch and how amazing of a BC spot it is, this just makes me sick. I totally understand Alta's reasoning for this (I have heard they would allow boarders in Grizzly once its built, filling a huge income gap) but I feel they need to respect the BC skiers of the Wasatch. There are PLENTY of them to utilize this area for what it is meant to be.

That being said, the ski industry is a business, making money is the goal. Putting a lift up Grizzly will boost income.

PS I gotta say once the lift is built and over with, its not like i could not want to ride it

I'm not a fan of any of it except for the snowbird mary ellen expansion because apparently theyll be making a tram that runs from hidden peak to west peak which means possible west peak shredding?
Also to speak on another positive resorts are gonna need a lot of people to patrol and maintain along with lifties. So a lot of jobs will open up.


Finally anyone want to put the work in to get a google earth picture of all the expansions and such?

Look kids you have to look at this from all angles. I am not saying that we should just mo down the Wasatch back country throw up a bunch of hotels and have restaurants all over the place. But in the long term (20 years) there is supposed to be a estimated 1 million more people living along the Wasatch front. And I am going to guess that a lot of those people are going to want to use the canyons, be it for skiing, hiking, rock climbing..etc. As anyone who goes up these canyons will tell you, at peak season, the canyons are way over capacity. Thousands of cars are driving up and down sends tons of pollutants into the air. Having chairlifts connect the canyons as well as a smart transportation plan ( such as a rail line up Big and Little) could help alleviate a lot of that congestion.

I want to emphasize I am 100% against any sort of new developments terms of condos hotels, restaurants. But in order for all of us to continue to use the canyons that we love so much something has to be done. And I think if this is done right it is the best way.

As for chads, dude the jump is still going to be there, It will just be more accessible.

I've done enough touring in that area to be pissed about it. Sure there are thousands and thousands of other skiable terrain, but over 50% of the time I go (there's that number again.. 50%) I go to Grizzly. Very few places can you go and build as many jumps in one area, 30 minutes from your vehicle.
A season without Grizzly is a sad thing to think about.

travis rice did like the second ever double there in 2004! theres definately way too much history there. just because they put lifts up there doesn't mean the gap will have to go. it could probably easily be arranged to keep the gap there and since it will be maintained by the mountain, it could have potential to be set up really nice.

^^^ this is a good idea^^^^

the ski areas selling a reasonable priced "ski utah gold/silver pass" and an open boundary policy is a good idea.  you don't need anymore lifts to connect the areas, its 30 minute hike up grizzly to twin lakes pass.  a 30 minute hike from solitude to the pc ridgeline.  they already are interconnected, you don't need more infrastructure.

AND TO THOSE SAYING THEY'LL LEAVE CHAD'S/PYRAMID WHEN THEY PUT IN THE LIFT, are you freakin' kidding me?!?!?!???  those things are mine tillings, they'll grade that shit right out in an afternoon.....  they're not going to put the lift in and say here you go kiddos jump right over the lift on your gap jumps.

more lifts are not needed in the central wasatch, PERIOD.

As much as I would love to see an alps style resort in the wasatch, i know that it would ruin alot of natural resources and cut the best easy access BC terrain in utah so I say no lift!!
