In my opinon, I think skiing is the most expensive sport done by a large amount of people. Yes, of course there are sports that only a few people do that are rediculously expensive like nascar and so on. Skiing is a sport for the rich. Not that there arnt people ski bumming and just getting by. Its just an expensive sport to do. Everything from skis, boots, outerwear, lift tickets, and the fact that often times you have to fly out west to get a good taste of it. I am not complaining what so ever, but it is definatly a costly sport. I pay for almost all my gear, and have been lucky to have had the opportunity to ski out west. What do you think?

it works out to about 1000 a year for me, I pay for all my gear and season passes, it ain't that bad.

biking can get pretty expensive too. you dont always have to get a lift ticket or a season pass like you do for skiing, but a quality dh sled is a good 6 grand, with the top of the line ones being around 8. not to mention, most bikers have dirt jump or all mountain/freeride bikes as well, plus lots of parts and maintenance. personally, i spend more money on biking than i do skiing. but thats just me

Having played hockey for 13 years I can say that it is super expensive. But not as expensive as skiing. Hell my bindings cost more then my first twins did so I think inflation is huge in the sport right now. However mx is expensive as hell. I race atvs in the summer and if you can't work on your own quad you better be super rich or you'll be broke. I'll list just a few things I bought for my atv this year. Tires and wheels= 400. Seat = 200. Exhaust. =225. Intake. 200. Power commander. 300. Shit ain't cheap. The only good thing is I worked at a dealer this summer so I got them for cost. I wish my parents still bought all my shit though. Enjoy it while you can.

Skiing can be as cheap or as expensive as you want it to be. Having beater gear costs like nothing if you buy it used, and a pass really isnt that bad. If you think about it, buying a $1000 season pass, and skiing everyday for 6 months is pretty cheap entertainment. 100 days=10 bucks a day. easy right?

Used skis(new to me)- $100
bindings (from swap)-$50
New Jacket-$160
new pants-$90
gloves-$30
total-$430
Most of my stuff lasts longer than a year so probably an average of $200 since I started skiing.

Skiing doesn't have to be expensive, just the kinds that people take seriously does, and thats by a relatively small portion... like EVERY SPORT.

ummm to everyone saying skiing is more expensive then hockey, you're wrong.

for me i usually spend around $700-800 on passes and gear for one year.

my bro plays hockey, and just to get in its like $1000, then another $250 for tournaments and prolly another $250 for gear per year. and hes 11yrs old, and plays house B it only gets more expensive as you get older!

My friend doesn't even race his wheeler and when he was finished jetting it, turbo charging it, new exhaust/intake system in it. It was well over 7Gs. (He also did it all him self)

But yeah, skiing is stupid expensive. It's kinda ridiculous.

No shit, a motorized vehicle is going to cost more than what the average skier pays.

I think the OP is referencing more the fact that its an expensive sport compared to others which arnt focused around motor vehicles.

Golf is definitely more expensive. Country club membership $30,000+, plus yearly membership fees of like $3000, plus a set of clubs which is like $2000.....

Even at a shitty public course your looking at $2000 a year for a "seasons pass"

Cheap boots of ebay
Cheap outwear from somewhere cheap, or ebay
Poles, not too expensive anyway
Then dont buy a lift pass and hike everything/hit urban

This is false....you can play golf for much cheaper than that. True I do have a $1500 set of golf clubs but those last for many years unlike some skis. A season pass to a nicer public course can run around $800-$1000 around here, but that's a nice course. I got my season pass to the mediocre (not even that bad, a decently nice course) for $300. Name me one "shitty public course" that costs $2000 for a season pass. Either you have the definition of shitty course wrong or you pay way too much for a membership.

I think skiing is rather inexpressive is long as you know your shit. By that I mean, invest you money. Buy a ski pass, buy your gear, pack lunches, and carpool and skiing is actually some of the cheapest fun you can have.

ski racing is probably the most $. you pay for coaching, travel to new mountains all the time, a ton of new gear, every year. it gets into the tens of thousands of dollars each year for racers who want to be competitive.

i think, that if u ski sick, u get sponsors - free gear. if u ski shit your gear will last longer.

but expensive sport is sailing, one season is like 10000 euros...

It can be. I got all my equipment maybe 4 years ago for about $700. Season passes are $300 for my home mt. So that's about $2000 for about 200 days of skiing (50 days a year), $10 per day. If I go to the local gokart racing place its like $10 per race. Sky High trampoline place is $10 an hour. Hell if I went to the batting cages 50 days a year it would cost about the same.

hockey is easily comparable and probably more expensive. like skiing you're probably dropping around a grand or more on gear, and paying to play for the season, also comparable to skiing. paying to play for the season is very expensive, not to mention the expenses of tournaments and trips in you're playing rep. (in terms of skiing its like passes, ski trips, etc.).

ive been a goalie in hockey for about 8 years and its ten times more expensive

pads- 1500
helmet- 500
chest protector-400
stick- 150
skates- 200
glove blocker-350
fee for AA/AAA- 2000
and some dress clothes
plus camps and stuff which is about 90 per session
= 5100

not including tournaments and jackets and shit

I havent bought new gear in 3 years. And when i do its used. You dont need new shit every year.

I have two roommates who play hockey and they paid $4000 each just to be on the team.

It all depends on what level you are competing. Hockey at a high level is going to be way more expensive than skiing. When people are skiing at a high level they replace gear every year. Golf you dont and lots of other sports you dont either.

You can make skiing as cheap as you want or expensive as you want. If want to make it cheap, you just have to be smart. To make it cheap: Buy gear at the end of the season to get the killer deals, carpool, pack food with you, etc.

It really depends on how close you live to the mountain and how long you stay without replacing your gear with new gear.

I mean if you live in the mountains anyway, and can get a reasonably cheap season-pass, then ski gear is not nearly as expensive as mountainbike gear or climbing gear. There is also always the option of touring.

Of course, a weeks holiday in many places in Colorado or California is just ridiculously expensive. In Europe skiing is somewhat more accessible than in the USA, and less of a rich-mans sport. I once booked a week in Serre Chevalier, France for 80 euros (appartment + ski pass). Then again, I once stayed in Alta for 2 weeks for only $400 (lodging + food + skipass). So I don't think skiing is necessarily limited to rich people if you make an effort.

yea that. my sister did it for awhile and it was mad expensive. you have to buy super expensive clothes to ride in, and saddles n shit like that. you also have to pay fees for showing.

I think of it more of like investment for experiences.

Probably right, that skiing is the most expensive sport i've taken seriously. The equipment can get pretty pricey if you like your gear fresh.

Garms you cant really bitch about being expensive as you could always go 2nd hand or hand-me-down's.

Ski passes are the only thing I really have to question spending my disposable on. A pass pays for itself after a few days and I you want different scenery all the time, there are tons of offers to get cheap lift tickets with bundled offers. SnowBomb.com, Groupon, Living Social ftw.

The little money I do make, i'll happily piss up the wall regarding anything for skiing. I'm hooked.

Motorsports tend to be the most expensive sports in the world. Automobile and motorcycle road racing to be specific. I ran a semi-pro superbike operation for a couple seasons and invested well over $160,000 in a 2009 championship bid, and that wasn't even in the AMA (pro circuit). I can't imagine what it costs to race cars competitively at any serious level....

You have to do everything twice, and everything has to be more precise. Also skiing is not really that expensive for me. If you don't live near a ski area and you buy expensive tickets and hotels then ya that gets expensive. For me it's more the mindset that I would rather be skiing than working that really depletes the bank account

This. I tried playing pb for a while and it easily beats skiing in cost. No season passes or anything so you drop like 50 bucks per day easily.
