The Future of Skiing and Ski Technology

Ok let's get this clear. We all love the sport and always will. We have been there and had that conversation. Now I thought to myself a couple weeks ago, where will it go? How will it change and how will the sport broaden. Im not just talking about triples or pushing the sport "trickwise". Im talking about the the technology as well. i was talking to a guy in my team about how far the sport will go and all that kind of stuff. He started talking to me and it seems that quite a few people are worried about the direction the sport is going! I have heard many crazy things that people have told me about the progression of ski technology. The point of this thread is that, quite a few people are worried about the direction skiing and ski technology is going. What are your thoughts?

why would you be worried? do you realize how far skiing has come in the last 5 years, let alone the last 10 or 20? Different construction techniques, different technology, different ideas, have all made skiing what it is today. Saying we should be worried about equipment progressing is the dumbest thing i have ever heard, especially now. IMO it feels like the freeride ski scene has finally established itself as mainstream and people are accepting that twin tips, rocker and fat skis are here to stay. Old dudes will be rocking something that would have been "EXTREME" just a few years ago. Don't worry, things will only get better.

I especially get where you are coming from. I believe the whole technology is going to be pushed into a direction we dont want. I can imagine in like 10 years our skis will have rocket boosters on them

What about in 10 years time? look at 10 years ago. The first twin tips were coming out. Skis were starting to get a little wider. Rocker was a joke in the industry that mcconkey was starting to play with. look at 10 years before that! Parabolic skis were the new shit. Where we are now is just the beginning of a new thing. The gear we have is the best it has ever been, and is enabling some people to do some pretty spectacular things. Its only the beginning. Rocker profiles, sidecuts, ski flex patterns, manufacturing processes, binding technology, boots, and everything else can be dialed at least a little bit more, if not leaps and bounds more. 10 years from now, who knows what the hell is going to be happening with skis. The only guaranteed thing is that it will be better than it is now.

When you say quite a few people are concerned, who are those people? there are already so many awesome things that im looking forward to in the next year or so that will be game changing, i dont understand how you can say this.

They were also talking about the norm "Oh man the sport is being pushed in the wrong direction!" and they were talking about how outwear is changing and how tight pants from the hideous 1970's is now coming back

Things have changed for functionality purposes, not just for style. things will never get back that way again. I can guarantee I will never ski anything under 85 underfoot for the rest of my life. Why? because its funner to ski a wider ski, whether its in the park, cruising groomers, or skiing powder. It makes skiing a lot easier than it used to be, and in no way is that a bad thing. Skis are tools to help us fly down the mountain in different ways, why would anyone try to go backwards on the progress we have made? Same thing with outerwear everything else in skiing, functionality is everything, just presented in different styles. Just because im riding a ski that is 122 underfoot, and wearing clothes that are baggier than they were in the 70s, doesnt mean im selling out to a new fad or idea, it means im riding the equipment that gets the job done! If a 210cm straight ski was a better ride than anything now, i promise you i would be all over it. And if tight pants from the movie hot dog were comfy, super waterproof, and allowed room for layers and a knee brace underneath, i would wear that too! Skiing is not a fashion show. If it is, you are doing it wrong.

I'm not worried about ski technology at all. it is much less bullshit than it used to be. skis have all sorts of new features, but they have returned to a tried and true construction, as opposed to some bullshit. there is no more Head Intelligence plates, or weird K2 skis with lights in them, or other bullshit. skis will change, but from here on out, I expect only for the better.

I don't think the progression of gear will be a bad thing. I do think it won't be long before the trend is wider, rocker/camber hybrids for everyday skiing. I also believe that the "triple lindy-gotta get in that last 180" style is gonna fade out in favor of a more chill style. Like bigger floatier airs and way less tech tricks. I also think the gypsy look and the "kids wearing jackets so long it looks like their moms nightgown" are gonna fade as well. That's not a bad thing. Haha

I do not think that it is very possible to predict changes 10 years in advance in a sport that continues to change at the speed of light. If I had asked you in 2001 what the next big thing in skiing was no way would you have imagined rocker. Yet I cannot count the amount of times I get asked by people on the lift about my skis and if they are worth the switch. This sport is not changed by the "commoners" but by the people who are journeymen of their craft. And these experts are created and fall so quickly now. Who knows who's going to be on the scene in 5 years and have the next big idea roasting in the oven?

The industry as a whole will less focus on ski and outwear development and more on keeping the industry afloat with the higher snow lines and smaller seasons. Snow Cannons will be needed to be more efficient and also make snow that has a higher melting point for the higher average tempratures we will see in the winter season.
