This.
I just moved out to Los Angeles last month from Detroit. I had one contact before I moved out, and moved in with my Uncle for 3 weeks. From that one contact I was able to land a PA job on a big production commercial (which was paid). I was able to make about 8 more from that. The week after, one of those contacts landed me another production job as a gaffer for a low budget commercial (which was unpaid). From that job, I got 3 more contacts and now have an interview as an editor at a production house. However my end goal is to become a DP - just like you.
There are a bunch of websites that or designed for entertainment jobs. That benign said, each day, I have spent over a hour searching. In the month I've been out there I sent over 60 applications - heard back from maybe 8. I have a few interviews schedule for next week, one which is at a camera rental house.
What Jeff_Lo said about going in, rather then send justing resumes is true. If I don't land the interview for the camera retail house, I will be heading to everyone and talking to them.
Networking is everything. During my PA job, this was the first one I did in LA, but I have done PA work before - bust your ass. Run, do everything fast, be nice. Basically if you want to work in production, the more effort you up in, the better chances you have at succeeding.
