a little girl didnt know how to stop and just hauled ass straight through the big window of the lodge at the bottom of the hill. not sure what happened to her though

Kid was trying dub back on a 30 foot table. Snapped his neck and died. Sad shit

Another time a racer caught edge and slammed into a lift tower. Died on impact

There's a few more but those are kinda the worst of them

I have a couple from last season:

1: We had a HS race scheduled but was canceled due to high winds that caused our summit chair to be shut down on a wind hold. Also important to the story is that there was also flat light conditions out. One of the racers was blasting down an intermediate run at near 55mph when he hit a cat track he couldn't see, flipped backwards and landed flat on his back. Broke his back and paralyzed from the waist down.

2: On an icy day, a snowboarder was trying to ride a mogul run under the chair. He was having a hard time with it so he figured it would be safer trying to walk out of the area. He also decided that it was a god idea to take his helmet off. He lost his footing and slid into three or four trees and hit one headfirst and died. What makes it worse is that he was only 16 and in high school.

Moral of these stories, pay attention to what's going on and don't ever take your helmet off unless you're in the lodge; you never know what could happen.

In the 80s, an avalanche came down from the high part of the mountain (Beaver Bowl. Massive cornice broke off and took a big bad slab with it) and wrecked a lot of shit. Base lodge, patrol HQ, some lift ops stuff including the bottom of a chairlift... I'm fairly certain more than a few people died.

Now, when there's enough snow, mountain ops builds a snow wall at the bottom of the steep upper section (bottom of Beaver Bowl).

A small child died/got seriously fucked up after hitting a water pipe off to the side of the hill. Felt really bad for the parents

I ski at Squaw and my dad is a patroller so I hear about all the accidents. Two or three years ago a guy died in an avalanche on Christmas day. We also lost a patroller to an avalanche while he was doing avy control. And of course C.R. died skiing at Squaw.

I've seen and heard of so many bad ones, it always bums you out a bit when you see someone being heli'd out.

I've been with people when they've broken femurs and shattered pelvis's. Not good seeing friends in that state especially when they're not in easy to reach/rescue places.

The most disgusting one i've heard about was from a patroller. He said it started with a snowboarder who was shitfaced and causing trouble at a slush cup. Before they could kick him off the mountain he crashed into the back of a girl who was sat down watching. A patroller went to check if she was ok and she just said her back hurt a bit. He lifted her top to check it out and the board's edge had sliced her open and some of her intestines had fallen out. He tried to make sure she didn't completely freak whilst signalling to the other patrollers for a chopper. He said the heli-ride was horrific - holding her intestines whilst trying not to puke because it smelt so bad.

Couple years back two or three people died in an Avalanche out of bounds, I think they were all either ski patrol or worked their though. There was another dude that died in the park, he has his own rail now that people write RIP messages all over in sharpie.

true story,

my buddy (whose a gaper) went off a decent size jump for the first time. He really miss judged the speed and i guess he couldn't control himself in the air. One ski flew right up vertically and when he landed the ski hit his ass really hard. He had to get eighteen stitches. Besides that it's a running joke at our mountain that my buddy, joe, got but raped by a ski.

Didn't witness this, but some kid managed to hang himself trying to unload at the midway station of a chair. He made it though, thank god.

1-3 people every year die at whiteface by hitting a tree....pretty sad stuff. That olympic snowboarder Jonatan Johansson died from landing a jump wrong in warmups in 2006....then less than a week later another an older man who was skiing with his family died... Leonardo David, that italian skier croaked here... and some guy on the nature valley circuit was paralyzed last year...
ooo and a girl on the lift in front of me and my buddies left her tips down and got dragged under the lift right at the summit....that was some funny shit...felt bad but damn...

Just a few I've heard of from patrol etc...

A snowboarder hit a jump while it was closed because there was a guy who had smashed himself getting loaded into a rig on the landing, hit the already messed up guy on the landing, sliced the guys whole back open basically from the hip to the shoulder with the edge of his board.

Some chick fell down a waterfall hole in spring and drowned, that would be pretty horrible.

There's been a couple of people who fell in bad places and couldn't self-arrest and fell off cliffs or hit rocks and died.

That's about it though. Nothing really gnar...

Small mountian, small park, small skiiers thinking they're Tom Walish(sp? IDGAF) = lots of ambulance calls. Kids break legs, arms, backs doing stupid shit all the time, hearing "Ski patrol to management, requesting ALS" is the worst feeling in the world, knowing some kid just fucked him self up.

Buddy on the ski patrol told me some guy got a compound femur fracture on the bunny slope once, no one is really sure how that happened. Many years ago some kid died in an accident on our mountian forcing the company that owned it to seel b/c their insurance dropped them and they couldn't get it insured by anyone else.
