at the mountain closest to me lots of people get caught in avalanches. um one time a snowboarder tried to gap one jumps take off to another jumps landing and hit the side like a wall and ended up dieing. i bet there are some other weird things but thats all i know

I was skiing at Arizona Snowbowl during a winter break a few seasons ago and they had this real sketch tire bonk set up that looked very small as you were coming into it, but once you got in the air, you flew past it almost immediately and were faced with this huge like 8 foot drop to flat. Nothing outrageously dangerous for your average park rider, but for the incredibly talented pool of Phoenix gapers that tend to frequent this resort, something bad was bound to happen. And sure enough: my next ride up the lift, I watched some snowboarder kid come into it too fast, lose balance off his back edge, and go 10 feet to flat on his head and neck (no helmet either). I rode down there after I got to the top and this kid had like five patrollers surrounding him as he was convulsing and foaming at the mouth. Needless to say, the ambulance came pretty quickly and wisked him away. No idea what happened to him after (I hope everything turned out alright in the end), but patrol shut that shit down real fast. Very very scary stuff.

I know of a few stories but here's a sick one with a happy ending. When I was living at killington, we were on the Skye peak quad with a family in front of us on the next chair. Well right before the top where the chair is pretty high off the run underneath, we watched the dad lift the safety bar and reach down to rebuckle his boots. Well his six yr old daughter decided to do the same but went right off the chair, face first toward the run far underneath. Anyone who knows the area between the last two towers of the Skye peak quad knows its a real good drop. She shoulda been dead. However her ski tips magically impacted first. Somehow the energy from that bounced her so hard that as her head whipped toward the ground she was already on her way back up. So her head missed the ground somehow. She no shit bounced nearly half the way back up but she bounced toward the uphill side of the fall line instead of down it, so her return fall wasn't quite as bad. My buddy was ski patrol so as soon as we got off the lift we raced down to her. Turns out all she did was break her collarbone and split her lip. Seriously she shoulda died. It was friggin epic though to watch and had a happy ending.

3 people dead.one fell off a cliff you could see it from the chair.second was right under the chair lady went head first onto a rock and for some stupid reason they stoped the chair so people were just looking at her .third in a little vally blood everywhere.makes you wounder how extream the stuff were doing really is

A few years ago at my mountain this guy hit a huge gap doing some switch spinny manuever but didnt clear the whole thing. I heard he broke both his ankles, and right after that ski patrol blew up the jump. Could just be a rumor though...

Haha well as unfortunate as this sounds it is still funny to me. As you know we aussies love our alcohol. After skiing, before, even for breakfast. Anyway there was a guy at the pub at my home mountain. He was there for quite a length of time. He was pumping all sorts of things into his liver, god only knows what. He was with two friends. Clock struck 12 and what else do you do when the bars shut. Well these guys were bored shitless so they had some thinking time. They went for a stroll underneath the chairlifts and went bout a km up the mountain. Outside one of the lifts a guy found a tire from one of the snow cats that had broken down a year before. When you off your face, in the snow, with a cat tyre, well you know what you will end up doing. Rolled it out to the top of the run and got inside. His mates didnt push him or whatever but he got in and started rolling. Because out maountain is resonably flat in areas, from that angle it would seem there is no harm in doing such a thing. WRONG!!!! He rolled ALLL THE WAY DOWN right to the bottom of the chairlift and hit a building. As stupid and unfortunate as this sounds, I still find it funny to this day. Lesson to learn from this: DON'T DRINK BEER, GET IN A TIRE AND ROLL DOWN A HILL

holy moly.

One person has already died at Vail this year. And my dad was telling me sometime in the 1970's there was a malfunction with a gondola (at Vail) and three cars fell of the cable killing seven people or something.

when I was in 5th grade two of my classmates (fraternal twins) were racing each other at our local mountain, hauling ass down the hill, ended up turning straight into each other and basically rebounded off in different directions. both ended up in the trees, one was literally wedged in one. it was so long ago i can't remember all the details, but one had a seriously broken jaw (wired shut, only drank milkshakes for a looong time), the other was in a body cast for 3 months along with a broken arm I think. didn't see it happen, but was at the mountain that day and its pretty much a story everyone in our town knows about, haha.

as far as what I personally saw, watched a family friend (who was a top notch racer, now coaches at Vail) take a gnarly dig while training slalom, yard sale and snow explosion everywhere with lots of screaming...knee reconstruction was necessary.

Not many gnarly crashes happen on a 300 vertical foot hill, but I did watch a guy get stuck horizontal on a hand drag, and fall 10 feet to flat ice. hearing a collarbone snap isn't a nice sound

Heard stories of several people dying from hitting trees at one local mountain.

Craziest thing I have witnessed was last year a kid was hauling ass switch down a trail, not looking, and some girl on a snowboard was sitting right in the middle.  Kid plowed into her going mach 5, his ass or lower back slammed into her head, causing her neck to slam forward hard.  Both were hurt pretty badly, as the skier flew into the air and landed on his head and back, but the girl's neck was possibly broken I wouldn't be surprised if she was paralyzed from it.

My dad worked patrol one year and said the worst he saw was when a snowboarder caught a toe edge and slammed his face off of a patch of ice, completely destroying his nose and busting open his forehead.  He said the amount of blood was unreal.  Kid almost bled to death.

I watched a young girl fall 40-50ft to ice off a lift at waterville valley last year. She tried to get off at the halfway unloading and her jacket or something got caught. the lift probably only traveled 15 ft past the station, but the ramp drops QUICK. I heard that she had to be taken to the hospital by helicopter.

A skier died a couple years ago at seven springs when a snowboarder collided with him on the north face slope and after the collision he slid like 20 feet into a snowmaking tower headfirst and died....

a snowboarder kid got caught in an avalance and got pinned against a tree for 4 hours with a broken femur last year, the year before some guy died cause he somehow hit the park after ski patrol did a sweep for the night ski, he laded on his head on one of the bigger jumps, snapped his neck and froze to death that night. i heard about this a week after it happened and it was the weirdest thing hitting a jump you know someone has died on..

some kid went straight down the trail and didnt know how to stop, so they went full speed straight into the waffle cabin at the base and broke both or their arms and legs

So I was 2nd in line for the lift yesterday, and they attendant goes "I like how they painted the wheel (big thing the chailift turns around on above your head) so it looks new"
then he leans in to the kid getting on and says, "YOU'RE NOT ANY SAFER!"

I remember that, I also saw someone try to go through a patch of trees (bottom of avalanche if you know seven springs) after bombing the entire hill. He lost control and slammed into one of the trees.

At bachelor one year a guy dug a snow cave into the snow banks bordering the parking lot, the next morning the snow blower came by to cut out more of the lot for the weekend, went straight through the now cave and killed the dude inside. I talked with one of the ski-patrolers who dealt with the situation, he said it was just a huge mess.

jiminy peak night skiing is literally death waiting to happen




but at mt snow 20ish years ago a patroller was skiing on the side of a trail when the groomed part literally collapsed lke 10ft. his leg took the drop straight to a tree stump and the bottom half shot up through his knee into the top half. he is now without half a leg.

yea that sucks. I had a friend who bombed tyrol, didnt see the orange caution fence at the bottom by the tennis courts and went flying into it and got all tangled up haha

My supervisor told me that a few years back, a young girl (5?) was skiing on a black diamond with her dad, and a snowboarder cut across the slope and hit her. The edge of his board cut her face in half, and she was missing her face. The guy took off because he saw how messed up her face was, and they never caught him. She almost bled to death and had to be taken off the mountain by heli,and she still has a pretty messed up face apparently.

2 years ago i was skiing through the woods on the way to the park, went a bit deeper into the woods than normal, double ejected and flew into a tree and got fucked up my arm. THERE WAS A CHAIN attached from one tree to another hiddin under snow

in ontario, canada so no one ever dies apart from the occasional gaper that runs into a tree that isnt wearing a helmet

worst ive ever seen though, 3-4 years ago some guy tried to backflip of a 40 footer at the mt.st.louis park (outback) he was out for like at least an hour and shut down the jump for just as long crazy stuff...

Last year or two years ago a guy was killed in an inbounds avalanche, people hit trees a ton and get seriously injured or die, and last year at Keystone some guy fell off a chairlift and got pretty seriously injured.

A kid hit a tree and died while I was at my home mountain. (Didn't see it happen, but saw the ski patrol/ambulance clusterfuck shortly thereafter) Yes, in the midwest, they can drive ambulances right onto the hill.

years back at 7springs there was a boarder hauling ass and popped out of tree line without looking and ran basically ran a skier in a lift pole. happened on a saturday, skier died wednesday. Awful. I was there that night too.
