My new Toyota is rad, but it doesnt weight anything and i'm having an issue. I have been driving around like the world is an icerink when wet , the truck drifts around most 90* turns and yeah its fun as hell, but once i actually get on ice its gonna be a bitch. I was thinking of filling the spare tire that sits under the bed with water , has anyone ever heard of this? I'm not concerned with rusting out that rim , its not nice the like the rest of em. Any other ideas? I dont want sand bags in the bed all winter. . .

also,your truck isnt a goddamn rock buggy, nobody fills their tires up with a bunch of water and drives around, also, that water sloshes around, which will be noticeable

if youre to gay to throw bags in er just get a cheap fiberglass canopy or something

Did you read what you replied too? Moron . If you think im waisting your time then dont fucking post , it would be nice if that where the case wouldnt it.  I had a hypothesis and i put it up to get shot down , so far  since no one here knows what the fuck there talkin about, i still like it.

 I dont care if i ruin the shitty tire with no tread or the shitty rim that it is on....

Again, not going to drive on it.

. Dont want sandbags or weights i the back of my truck.

 I understand its going to expand. Its not gonna slosh when its frozen and it will be all winter long. If it does there isnt enough room for it not cause a noticable difference.

 I am just hiding weight children.

i dont get how filling up your spare tire, even if it is a full size, is going to provide enough weight, im also confused as to how you get a tire to seat on the bead with water instead of air but maybe thats just because ive never tried this before.


why wouldnt you just put sandbags in the back like a normal goddamn human? it would just be... easier... and... better.


like you are taking the most difficult way of going about this just because you want to. dont do that. its stupid and all the kids will laugh at you.

How else do you attach a trailer to a truck other than a gooseneck? That diagram shows and overloaded truck. What the fuck does that have to do with anything? If it wasnt overloaded, it would sit like a normal truck when it has a trailer on it and most of the trailer weight would be on the rear axle.

that would be difficult i think . Fluid is much easier to get into small spaces. Water is cheap/free other material is costly plus there is no empty space in water where as even sand has allot of air in it. Sand can be compressed because of relitivly high porosity, water cannot be compressed without allot of energy. Outside the spare is a different Idea,m i could have a big bolt welded to the frame and add a few free weights and cinch those up nice and tight... hmmm ^ Best post yet in this thread thanks. you got me thinking.

Its also the safest, cheapest and easiest alternative.

My 2 cents.

Filling a trail rig full of water that will go maybe 20 tops and wont be in freezing conditions is WAY different than a street driven vehicle.

That's why you have to learn to load your trailer properly. Distribute the weight over the trailers axles. A hitch/truck is rated to a certain tongue weight, which is the difference if force on one side of the fulcrum compared to the other.

OP, the reason everyone is saying water in your spare is retarded is because the mount which holds your spare in place is designed to hold 40 pounds, not 175.

Not planning on using your spare? Lemme guess, you don't ski with a helmet because you're not planning on hitting your head?
Shit happens. Just use some sandbags. Build an encasement for them if you think they look stupid.

to be honest, I'd use sand, but you have your reasons not to.  Garden variety steel is roughly 7.8 times more dense than water so even if you could quarter fill the tyre area you'd be getting more mass than with water.  What about some form of disc to put inside the rim?

It's fairly common around here for tractors and mowers etc to partially fill tyres with water to keep weight down low. So it's not unheard of. In this case though filling the spare with water sounds like retardation on rails. Better tyres, slowing down and sandbags sound like far better options. And if you're always driving around with an empty truck, maybe consider how much you actually need it.

You said you were going to get a tool box right? If there is going to be any reasonable amount of anything in this tool box (I'm assuming its going to be a decent sized one) than this will be quite heavy. Just attach it to the bed near the cab. If your going to do anything make sure the weight is near the rear of the cab not like right over the rear axel or wherever you were going to put it. It won't work if you do that. So yeah hope this helps. I do work at a mechanics and they have a few trucks so I do kinda know what I'm talking about.

I keep tons of shit in my bed at all times under the tonneou cover(don't steal my shit) like a jack, couple cement blocks(for jacking up my truck ICE), tools, shovels, chains and straps(all good things to have ICE) this all adds weight and I have no problems.

upgrade your rear bumper to aftermarket or have a buddy fab one up that is super heavy and looks totally badass. mount a highlift jack back there too?? those things are heavy and useful.

LOL at dumbasses saying not to put weight far back in your bed or that a spare chain wouldn't hold a tire full of water haha.

Also you'd do better off asking this in the Toyota 4x4 cult, I thought you were in there but I'll shoot ya an invite since you're an owner.

I feel you man, i almost fucked my truck going like 10-20 k around a turn in the wet yesterday. My spare is in the same place as yours and it does not look like it would hold 175 pounds, just get sand bags throw them in the bed and wedge a piece of wood between the wheel wells in the bed then nothing slides around and you have plenty of room

My idea would be to take out the spare tire. Get a card board piece of wood that is sturdy enough to hold a couple sand bags and put the sandbags where the spare should be, then screw in the board. this may be a challenge. You should screw 1 screw and hold it so you can slightly fit the bags in, once they are in slide it over some more and push more in until full then screw shut.

Sorry if grammar is horrible I have been up for the past 3 days (insomnia) and Don't even know what class I am in right now.
