Critique a photo...

Hey M/A, I took this shot at a local bar this weekend. My cousin's band was playing and he asked me to come take photos. I'm really not sure about this on. I like some parts of it but hate others.

So NS, what do you think. All and any thoughts are helpful (and of course will be rewarded with K). Composure, de-focus, editing, subject, ect. If you hate it, tell me you hate it, I can take it.

The focus of the picture is the musician, but you put the ACTUAL focus on the back of a chair..

I understand what you were trying to do but I don't think it was effective. And I find the contrast to be really jarring.

I probably should have put this in the opening:

I'm applying to ryerson for photography this winter, and I have to do 6 photo's on a theme. They made it very clear they did not want dogs/friends@lockers/flowers/ect. My dad suggested the back of a chair... I thought, thats different, so I tried it, idk how it worked out thats why I made this thread.

In my opinion: I would not submit something like this as part of an art school application.

I have no intention of adding it to my portfolio, as I stated above. Thanks for the critiques though. I know its a little over contrasted, I'm still trying to perfect my editing (picture style on camera, as well as post). Again I had no expectation when making this thread, I just wanted to see what people though.

If you are applying a body of cohesive work this winter you should probably start coming up with your own ideas that you could actually use for a series. Just because 'back of chair' is different than flowers/dogs/fences/etc, I would consider it to be in the same group.

I know it is, I had no intention of using it (as I have said before), I just wanted to try making a boring subject (chair) interesting (violinist). I am thinking of something along the lines of depth (not dof, physical depth) and lines, I'm going to have a 6 shot set up soon for critique as well.

didn't really know what i was looking at right off the bat till i looked a little closer. seems like for an approach like that use a bit deeper depth of field so the musician isn't so lost with the bokeh and the contrast makes the composition really confusing as well imo
