Summer Internships?

Ok, this may be a long shot, but i really want to shoot skiing or snowboarding over the summer, are there any internships that would be applicable for a 15 year old? any? at all? its a long shot, but i'm really motivated to do it..

if your "motivated to do it" dont just make a thread about it on ns, consider what company you would actually want to intern for, and what company could realistically hire you, then hit them up with a cover letter resume and examples of your work, good luck


as far as age, think it depends on age

I know, ive been considering ski camps, but there all 18 or 16 or so, and i was just hoping i could get responses from people more experienced in this area, like mr. heath, or mr. start or someone along those lines, and what companies would be open to this.. and if they would be interested in anybody my age..

It's nothing personal but even in my experience being that young you should just enjoy skiing and hone in your skills.  Learn the camera, NLE's, post process and grow your knowledge as much as possible. 

Your going to have a hard time finding anything if your under the age of 18.  Alot of it has to do with dependability and experience.  Even as an intern it costs them money to get you there, house you and what not if you have to go out of state/country. 

There are zillions of 15-18 y.o's looking for jobs/internships with ski and snowboard companies.  The problem is they'll likely take the most experienced and reliable person possible.  It's hard to count on someone that young.  You need transportation, equipment, etc.  Some places provide it many don't.  A lesson I learned at the age of 18.  I didn't have my own gear or adequate gear and it was an uphill battle for me.

Practice, Practice, and study.  Wait til your in college and can get credits for it.

Another thing to consider is how big of a commitment it is. You film and edit all summer for a camp and in return all you get is a place to stay and a handful of actual ski days. I was like you not too long ago; I was really amped for this summer to intern at one of the camps (I was turning 18 so I woulda been eligible). But when it came down to it, I realized recently that I wasn't really down with giving up my whole summer to shoot and edit 2-4 edits a week (and in the case of windell's, stay at the ark).

I mean it is a little different for me considering I have access to hood in the summer whenever I want, but you get the point; be ready to put in quite some hours. I'd talk to Riley Snyder if you want some insider info though. He was the OG photo intern at Windells

I mean it's definatly worth it for me, seeing as though I live in Ohio… I'll probably look into Ohio dreams as well though…

You're most likely a little too young for an internship for all the above reasons, but that being said why not try? If you don't get anything, you still have a HUGE advantage and that is your young and you've got years to build your skills, equipment, and examples of your work that will give you a really good shot at landing an internship when you're in college or whatever. So stay stoked and keep working on your skills, and remember you miss 100% of the shots you don't try.

I actually think all the advice in this thread has been wrong so far.


I don't know if Woodward has an age requirement, but I do know that when I was interning at woodward east, i was 18 and there were 16 year olds working there as well. However, I have no clue if they accept interns younger than that.


Obviously people have already raised the point of having to film almost every day and not getting paid for it. But in my opinion, if you view that as a waste of your time or summer, you don't actually enjoy filming that much. If you really like to film, it shouldn't feel like a duty, especially if you're shooting skiing and snowboarding. Most people wouldn't complain about skiing every day and not getting paid for it. If you truly enjoy filming skiing and snowboarding the way you would enjoy something like skiing, you will be HAVING FUN by going up and filming all day. I know that when I worked at Woodward, i worked like a dog in 90-100 degree heat all day to get shots, but I had a blast. I wasn't even shooting action sports, I was filming camp rec activities. But I love filming so it was a really good time regardless. So don't let that kind of talk discourage you!

I understand what everybody else is trying to say, but I just feel like there's no reason to discourage a 15 year old (who has experience filming and editing) from seeking out an internship.

My post wasn't to discourage him.  I was just saying I don't know many places that would hire an intern at that age.  If they do and you want to film and edit more power to you.  What I was simply saying is whats involved and the time. 

My first internship I edited, did graphics, shipped from a company shipping 4 different ski movies and 1 Surf film, set up and put on 2 premieres and also handled general office duties for no pay, and thats alot to handle at 18.  It was a dream come true and I'd do it again.  But what I'm saying from my experience, when your not out of HS yet its good to enjoy your time with friends on the hill.  There is nothing wrong with filming and editing.

Get experience by doing it yourself.  Spend that time studying and learning.  If you can find an internship great.  If not I don't think it should be something you rush either.

Like I said previously, it's a little bit different for me. Given that one of the major incentives of interning (skiing/filming skiing in the summer) isn't much of an incentive for me. If it weren't for that, I bet I'd be totally down to do some interning in the summer. Sounds like a fun time if you're looking to get on snow in the summer, apart from the ark if you intern at windells.

Look, what the others said is partially true, but there are certainly exceptions.

This summer I was 15, and I interned at Icelantic Skis in Denver, CO, with no prior experience, work, etc... They totally were down to have me and a couple other high schoolers as interns, and none of us really had any prior qualifications. It was awesome, and I'd say just go for it. That being said, I don't know if the same will happen for you based on different location, company, situation, etc... But still, try for anything you can!

Thanks for all these new responses I really appreciate it. No offense to you Mr. Blatt, but I just don't think you see where i'm coming from, I live in Ohio, I would love to film everyday and edit all night just to be around skiing during the summer, or anything really. I'd be super down to shoot anything in reality, i'd just prefer skiing. And to Mr. Loewe, I can't really enjoy the time out on the slopes in the summer in Ohio i'm pretty sure...lol. And thanks Mr. Start, see, I really do love filming more than anything in the world, i'm just very limited in Ohio to do a lot of filming during the summer(besides skating of course) thanks for the advice though. I'll look into Woodward, do you by any chance know if the copper one will accept interns? And last of all, to Mr. Rudy, thanks for telling me about icelantic, i'll for sure email them or something.

You don't have to make what you film exclusive to skiing.  Yes that is probably the most fun.  What I'm saying is if you can't find anything that takes you away from Ohio don't limit yourself from learning.  Pick up a book, film the city, a short film, anything.  All of that helps you grow.

No Copper will not except any interns under the age of 18, Woodward in Pa will not except any interns under the age of 16, keep looking into it though there is a chance that they will take you at 15. My goal next summer is to intern there. At the moment though they have no applications available to fill out.

Ah that's too bad.

an internship at woodward PA is really, really sick. I've learned so much there, from shooting skating, inlining, and biking, to gymnastics, camp rec activities, and short films.

Woodward at Copper is a little bitch about internships. Right now I'm working to get something with Level 1 next summer.

this is not true. I interned at Copper last summer, then i broke my collar bone on the first day, ending it. I was supposed to film, edit, some photo, and help out after 5 cleaning. I was 16. I will be there this summer again, i'm not saying they will hire you, they said they are just trying it out and seeing what happens.

if I'm over 18 and am thinking about interning somewhere next summer should I just send my resume into ski companies and camps? Or is there a better way to go about it?

Yeah I said they wont hire under 16. These are the requirements to intern there.

Must be at least 16 years of age
Must have previously attended as a Woodward Camper
Responsible for assisting Digital Media staff with shooting, editing, and creating projects.
Must have experience with Apple IMac computers and software
Ownership of recommended equipment and/or musical instruments helpful
Desire and passion to learn and acquire new skills necessary
This is NOT a paid position - Room and board are provided.

My question is, will they take you if you have been to a different Woodward. It says you must have attended as a Woodward camper and I have at Woodward at Copper, but not at Woodward at Pa.

i just caught an edge in a rail on the mountain and landed on my shoulder. i wasn't working that week i was gunna work the weeks after. They weren't too pissed, just sucked i couldn't be there all summer.
