First day boot problem

so today was my first day skiing this year as whistler opened yesterday. So i got a pair of spks this year and after a couple hours or so my shins were feeling like someone had just taken a hammer to them.
I weigh 130 im 5'6 and an agressive skier. do u guys think the boots are to stiff and thats the problem or what?

did you actually get fitted into spks or did you just go buy them.. If you fitted into them most ski shops will probably try to make them fit better. If you just went in and bought them idk what they'll do.

It is most likely that they are too big. Like the person above me said, did you have them properly fitted?

by fitted do u mean heat moulded and stuff or did i try on sizes and stuff. because i went in there and the guy got me into a good size and said this is the stifness for u and stuff and we made sure they fit but no heat moulding or anything and for some reason the boot fitter was trying to steer me away from full tilts

Yes, that means you did get them fitted. Fitted basically just means you tried them on with a boot fitter, and they fit well. But bottom line, do they feel too big?

I'm not really sure then. I'm 5' 11". 155 lbs, and my SPKs haven't given me shin bang. If you haven't already, just make sure you buckle them up so that they are snug. Another cause could be landing backseat.

try going to a different boot fitter and see if he says the same thing. You could also try getting a booster strap, always make your boots snug and do not ride backseat! Riding backseat is horrible for shinbang. Trust me lol

I doubt its the boot being too stiff.. I have SPKs they not stiff. Try giving it another day or two then boot will mold to your foot and shin a little more, but it probably wont go away(just my assumption)

The first couple of days in a new pair of boots are always uncomfortable, even if you had them fit/moulded/whatever else. Grin and bear the pair for the next couple of days and then they will feel great, at least that's always been my experience with new pairs of boots.

You can always try just wearing them in the house so that they get packed out. Had the same problem and it sucked.

If you wear them inside your house do not just sit around and watch TV. This will restrict your ciculation and your not doing anything to make up for it resolting in your feet getting cold.

Did you get them at the salomon shop in whistler? Im one of the boot fitters there, if your having issues with them bring them in and Ill see what I can do. It may well be that your foot is pronating in the boot (what footbed did you get?) or it could be that your instep is a little low in the boot. Either way its easy to sort out. Bring them down ill have a look at them.

you probably need to buckle them tighter, or, a problem my friend had, was he has chicken legs so even at the most tight they still werent tight enough so it may be that its too big around the shin area

Make sure that the strap and buckles are as tight as they can get, that will probably help.

Footbeds play a huge role in preventing shinbang so make sure you get set up with them. But it's also day one of the season on new boots. Get footbeds, have the liners heat molded, wear them around in the house for a few days, and make sure to take it easy the first few days of skiing. That your shins feel like that on day 1 on new boots is not irregular.

Screeeech! Pump the brakes here y'all. I know what the problem is. I am guessing that your lower legs are not all that skinny? Regardless, the spks are notorious for super narrow tongues out of the box. There is a solution. You can do this yourself or go back to your fitter and ask them to do it. On the spk liner it has that hard plastic front. Basically you have to heat that up and and stretch them a little flatter. I'd recommend having your shop do it because if you go to low on the tongue with the stretching it will cause all kinds of tongue seating issues around the top of your foot. Anyway, I had the same exact issue with mine and after we stretched that tongue flatter, the shin issues went away and they were much more comfy. Funny cause a good buddy of mine jus got new spk pros and was complaining of the same thing. I showed hom what to do and now theyre right as rain. Hope that helps.

Sorry. Was doing ten things at once and could have explained that better. The tongue has a real narrow or tight curve for the shin. It's not that the tongue is too narrow like I made it sound. So ya heat it up and make that curve less extreme. Hope that makes sense. If ya have any other questions hit me up.

Good stuff man. Glad I could help. Just be real careful how far down the tongue you flatten it out. If you go past the ankle area toward the top of your foot and make that too wide it will cause the tongue in that area to feel like its seated properly inside the liner but it won't be. What will happen is after about half a day you will feel as though there is a knot on top of your foot. Spks are notorious for this as well even if you don't stretch the tongues open wider but improperly doing so can exaggerate this effect. On the 2012 spks it appears as though they've tried to address this issue by making a bigger elastic band across the top of the forefoot of the liner so I'm guessing it's not as big an issue this year. If however you start to experience the dreaded "princess and the pea" spk issue, (called that because it feels like a stone or "pea" on top of your foot.), the quick fix remedy is to make sure you push down the entire tongue inside the liner before you buckle up each time. Good luck either way.

Juuuuuuust to make sure... where did you chuck the little tag thing that you pull to tighten up the liners? One day I got monster shinbang off a fairly small jump and it turned out that little tag thing had slipped down the tongue of my boot somehow and got rammed into my leg when I landed...
