Spinoff: How Do You Judge a Contest Based on Style?
This is a HUGE issue I have with the whole NS movement of "every contest should be based on style". There are a variety of different styles out there, who decides which is "better" or "worse". Max Hill and Phil Casabon for example. Lets say they both do the same trick. Both will no doubt be full of style, but how do you then judge that? Whose is "better"? Style is entirely subjective, so how do you judge it?
This is what people dont understand. You cant judge style.
Even elias has a type of style. Hes always controlled and lands perfect. Its not just what we consider super styley.
i would say NS public vote, but then it becomes a popularity contest like the skier of the year and one hit wonder down under. you dont need tricks, they all just stand on the landing and the one will the tallest t wins, simples.
i completely agree that still is hard to judge, if not impossible. however you could judge on neatness of a trick. did the skier land centered and not backseat? did he hold the grab for as long as possible? were his hands free-for-all or calm? i'm sure some of these are already in judging now but thats just how i see people judging on "style".
sytle should be judged on their general composure through the trick. since most the top guys are decently composed through 75% of the trick, style is super hard to judge.
but that hurricane type landing where they look like they could eat shit, into a fucking pizza wedge, to immediate feet together, to afterbang shit needs to stop.
to me, what makes henrik, phil, wallisch, andreas, pk, and some others style so much better is that when they are going to land, they are completely ready, composed and pull it all in before they land. they land in a carve, not that wedge shit that most guys win comps with.
How often do you see a guy win when hes landing pizza style though? I think city big airs that happens occasionally, but pretty much everyone lands sketchy on those, its a wall of ice essentially.
But then arent you taking away the free in freeskiing? If you start mandating certain things on certain features, you really are making the sport more regulation based.
Sure Casabon hasnt won X, but he makes it to finals pretty much every year doing his own thing instead of dubs like others do. Why should we require others to do that if they dont want to?
Both knees tucked into gut until landing (unless doing a Lui Kang, then I prefer to see the extended leg, not extended but bent at the knee 90 degrees)
Grab, all the way through to landing.
Arm/hand not grabbing should be tucked in tight to the torsoe
No, no, no, I think you're misinterpreting what I am saying.
It would be more like an "optional" jump. You can throw a double, but more-as a jump where you are ALLOWED to show off your style, if you like.
As to the post above Ben's, X-Games competitors always practice their run multiple times beforehand, correct? That way, they can evaluate what it looks like, etc. If they feel it ruins the flow, they can simply toss that trick and put another one in.
But no one is stopping you from showing off your style now... As I said, I think its pretty clear Phil has been focused on style the last few years in his X-Games runs, its not liked hes kicked out for not doing dubs.
In your scenario then what happens to people who chose to do a dub on the designated "style" jump? Are they penalized for doing a bigger trick on that jump? Or is someone doing a dub 10 (most likely grabbed all the way through and landed clean) suddenly treated the same as someone doing a 9 grabbed all the way through and landed clean.
I judge style not bassed on what people wear but how clean they land/do tricks. Max hill could do a cork 7 and b-dog could do a cork 7 but if one of them was back seat then the other person had better style on that given trick.
