Powder skiing with park skis

Hi. I have K2 Press skis. They are 80 park 20 powder. I am planning a trip to Brekenridge this season. My brother is worried that I won't be able to ski in powder with these. He says that I will just sink and stop. Is this true? Would I be able to do any sort of powder or big mountain skiing? thanks

fat skis didn't exist 10 years ago and 10 years ago people skied powder. If you are a good skier you will be fine. Though don't get me wrong I am sure fat skis are more fun.

80/20 park/powder... that doesn't really compute to me, why would a stat like that even exist?

Either way, you said it yourself with that silly stat - do you really want to ski powder at 20% capability? there's a reason we ski powder in fat skis. Or you can take the other advise in this thread and ski like it's 1989.

Wear a red spyder 1 piece and lean back like a motherfucker. Knees together, lots of daffys....you'll be fine.

you can ski powder with them. you can with any ski but it is not going to perform nearly as well as a powder specific ski. demo some powder skis if you get dumped on and want to have more fun

I have skied the AR7 at lake chutes in 2 feet of pow and they worked. Its not impossible its just harder.

i think that the whole percent thing, like 50 percent park 50 percent pow is bullshit, it should based on the skill of the skier

just go fasssttt! if youre really concerned about it, go to a local shop that does demos, or even rent some... lots of rental shops have pow skis, you might just have to search more. a shop i used to do some marketing work for had gotamas and maidens in their fleet... pretttty badass, and hardly anyone ever rented them

Oh man. Breckenridge's powder is light when it happens You'll be fine. That and the likelyhood of a large storm isn't that great. 10 inches of fluffy stuff isn't hard to ski in regardless of the ski you are using. Sure if you go to a windpacked area you may be a little bothered, but if you really can't deal, you can demo.

I think all of last winter (in Summit during one of their biggest years on record) I only took out powder skis maybe 10 times... and I skied many many days.

I was skiing my k2 seths in japan a few years ago. They're not park skis but they're mounted close to centre. ANyway I jumped off a cat track into a beautiful untouched field of powder but when I landed my tips sank. I kept moving forward and my tips got lower and lower and lower until finally.....POP! The skis stopped, I double ejected. my forward momentum carried me through the air like superman with my arms down by my sides. The whole thing happened in slow motion. I remember having time to look around me as I flew about 1m above the snow for a really long time. I ended up head first in 2 ft of powder, classic cartoon style. My skis were sitting there perfectly parallel in the deep snow.

just get an ABS pack because if you don't show up with at least some pontoons you will literally be buried alive as soon as you step out the door out there.

Granted these aren't mounted dead center, they're still 70 mm underfoot.

And, it depends more on where they're mounted than the width. If they're 110 underfoot, normal camber, but mounted dead center, you'll likely be more likely to nose dive than a park ski mounted 7 cm back.
