head gaskets done by a shop ~1200. engine "replacement " will run you the same, if not more. sometimes you can find mom and pop shops that will do better. the unfortunate part is the head gasket leak is very common with that motor.

when your first head gasket blew did you replace the other one also?

they were warped and we had them machined. The radiator is brand new.

ugh a head gasket blew in my subaru about a year or two ago! i think it's a fairly common thing with subarus. I don't remember how much it cost to fix it, all i know it there have been so many problems w my subaru it's ridiculous. and it's only an '03 legacy! we got it from my grandpa after he died so i do think it's slightly cursed so i feel like that might have something to do with it...

replacing a head gasket is about 2500 geting a new engine is 2500, i new-used engine runs like 600-800 and the hours to replace it makes it 2500, same deal with the gasket. don't go to a subi dealership they are idiots who charge 90+ per hour, go to the local subaru specialist they are cheaper and use all subaru genuine parts.

Not true. We dont charge that an hour for service, and I dont feel that we are idiots.

if you work in a subaru dealership. i STRONGLY FEEL THAT WAY, you guys tell me things i already know and replace the exact same part in my car that i just recently replaced, the the parts were genuine subaru parts. and then you get charge $350.

ok story time, so i was having a misfire caused by an ignition related problem so say the dealership, tho i had bought the subaru ignition cables and ngk platinum spark plugs, the dealership insisted that, that was my problem, so they replaced the ignition cables and ngk platinum spark plugs with the exact same parts, they told me some cables can be bad off the self and that i put the wrong spark plugs in, they replaced my new ngk platinum spark plugs with new ngk platinum spark plugs, then they charged me $350 for it all. GUESS what its wasn't the ignition part at all, not the coil not the ignition cables not the spark plugs. happend to be a bad knock sensor that some local joe figured out and charged me half what the dealership would cost,

spark notes. dealerships will do whatever they think will get them money, even if they aren't right, and will NOT guarantee what they do to your car will fix it, they only guarantee the work they do. which wasn't the problem in the first hand. they over charge. and subaru specialist are where its at.

what happens with the head gasket the actual head gasket can rust out and get all fucked if you don't flush it. but you need to do both at the same time. once one goes the second is not far behind. I've seen it many times, I've had 4 head gaskets go on the same model car but different cars. do both when you have it apart

Sorry that you feel that way. Thats not a good experience have.  I have worked for both a dealership and a Subaru specialist. I can tell you that the experience is pretty much the same across the board. The only reason I would recommend a large dealership, is they typically have more in stock, and are quicker. They also will be the first to "warranty" their work.

You also have to remember that the techs or service advisors are required to explain things so that everyone can understand them. So if you are more inclined than the person behind you, you may want to advise them. And if they are replacing the same parts that you did, you may want to find another dealership.. as that is more on the techs side of fault, rather than a "small specialist vs. dealership" sway.
