Style and Comps dont mix well.
If you want style, watch the B and E show,
If you want hucked flips watch the x games.

I would like to see a JOI style jump, and i want to see stylish triples and anything else they can do on that crazy jump.

this. it would be cool to see a big air sized jump but you cant spin over 9 and judging is based on style. but still do a big air event tripples and all

Speed has been an issue with courses the past few years with 70 footers. How on earth are they going to build a course with 90+ footers. Unless they agreed to finally stop compacting the course down like they do, and extend it like the euro x course with room between features.

it kind of does. i enjoy style as much as the next, but doing bigger spins/flpis can definitely be called pushing the sport. whether or not you think that's a good thing is a different matter, one that i think hasn't been discussed NEARLY enough on this site.

Just skiing flat ground is boring to watch though. Athletes need to be doing tricks all the time, we should expect to see rails and jibs on the landings and takeoffs this year.

I saw a comp like that in an old winter of wells at freestyle CH were you had three jumps in the final one techy one style (540 or under) and then one more for whatever.

I say they should have a round for style then one for technicality and then take the person with the best combined, instead of judging both at the same time. I just want to see some less than 900 degree rotations

Its all a marketing issue. Spread out course is bad for TV, not as exciting, which equals less viewers and less $. Same thing with having a style contest, the core skiers (AKA NS) will appreciate it, but the general public will think its lame. Also, take into consideration how lame the best method or mute or whatever they had last year in snowboarding was, or the ski pipe big hit. Both were slightly entertaining, but watching someone on tv try to do 3 off axis flips before they hit the ground is going to catch a lot more attention than a styled out cork 9 or whatever. X games is the biggest exposure freeskiing has to the general public, make it as big, tech, and tv friendly as possible! more money into skiing equals better gear, more gear, and lower prices for all of us.

90+ feet would be sick, i wanna see the gnarliest tricks possible. its called big air so it kinda calls for it imo.

but i would like to see at least 1 feature in the slopestyle where they are doing like cork 3s and stuff...

Style is already a part of the big air jumps, but not a large part. I would rather have two rounds, one normal, and one where style is weighted as much as tech is in the normal, and vice verca. this would force people to do super stylish tricks, but if someone wants to throw down the steeziest dub 10 of all time, and they can, they should be allowed to do that.

YE like one run only spin under 9, and the other one only over 10. combo score wins. so you'd see the same athlete throw a rodeo 5 and dub 16 in the same comp, for equal weight towards winning.

It's big air.  There's only one jump.

But in slopestyle news, I heard they are going to do the slope comps under the lights.  Should be interesting. Hopefully it will alleviate the problem with lighting they've had in previous years.

Agreement. Good style is good. Bad style/no style is bad. And I love watching skiers with great style.

But when It comes to TV competitions, I wanna see people putting their lives on the line for my entertainment.

you know what i would really like to see in comps now a days? I think JOI did this at some point.

Best 180. best 3,5,7,9

1080 etc. Dub corks sw tricks. Stuff like that would be so much more fun to watch. I have no clue if it could work but they could do something like best 900 then best double? best un natural trick? This would make it more interesting.

shits fucked up. you can throw the gnarliest most huge and smooth 720 with a tweaked out grab and stomp the landing, but tony hawk's sloppy 900 makes him a skating legend for the next decade.

i want to see shit that looks effortless. if you can do that with some ridiculous triple.. whatever.. fine. but if something is hucked and ugly, it should not be rewarded just because of the amount of rotations. and to be honest i'd rather see a no movement, ultra slow switch 7 with a grab held perfectly the entire time than anything else. lets make athletes start working on how perfect their style is and how well their tricks can flow rather than how much you can twirl around.

i gotta say, let the comps be a huckfest. its so gnarly watchin guys try and get as many spins/flips as humanly possible within the given airtime is nuts.

as for the style side, thats what video parts are for. build a huge ass jump and see a zero spin off of that followed by a crazy smooth double. ski videos are for the core skiers (NS) and we can all appreciate style over big tricks on huge features in movies

I think WSI Big Air did this before as well if I remember correctly. Any format that doesn't allow someone to throw the same trick all night is sweet.

Well sorry to break the news to you but no.

Most of the viewers are people who don't really have a clue what's happening. And trust me they have NO IDEA what style is or why Harlaut or Casabon are so loved by the "knowing" ski community.

xgames will NEVER put a 'style' jump in the course like some of you suggested. open your eyes.

Contest are for technical and innovative tricks. It was ALWAYS designed like that and that was the case in every sports.Same goes for skiing. And mind you, there are actually people who enjoy watching skier pushing the sports in the technical way.

You want style? You have 10 15 movies coming out every fall with this in focus (stept and 4bi9 for example). That's your thing, good for you but please let us enjoy  our way of skiing entertainment. I for one enjoy watching Russ or Elias stomping tripples in comps or Bobby Brown throwing a never seen before double misty 14.

Seriously, stop being fucking narrow minded and think for a while of the majority of people watching espn when xgames are on; I can bet most of them have no clue who Harlaut or Candide are. They want excitement and entertainment and a switch 9 won't cut it anymore. There is a reason Dumont won with a double front.

At the end of it, freesking had "free" in it for a reason, everybody do their thing and everybody will find his part of enjoyment. Stop thinking your judgment is better than anyone else. 

ps1: and I'm not even talking about the difficulty of judging style. Who are you to say Wallisch has a better style than Hatveit for example? As far as I know, they both usually land as clean as it get and they both held their grab as long as it is physically possible. The only difference is their clothes sizing. (I generalize a bit but you see my point)

ps2: sorry for the grammar, English isn't my first language. it's actually my third YAY CLAIM

He's famous because he was the first one to do the trick. Can it be just as sick to throw a huge 720, perfectly stomped? Yes, but don't expect to be famous for doing a trick that other people have done before.

And while it would be nice to see buttery smooth spins and mint grabs, that's not what the public wants. They want to see the biggest spin and the most flips, and that is, like it or not, what puts money in to the sport.

Just my opinion here, but I think we leave X Games as basically a big show off to the general public as a way to get more money into our sport. Let X Games be the one competition where guys just huck the biggest stuff so that the old grannies sitting on their couches flipping through the channels, see it and think "wow that's nuts!". To us it may be ugly but it has a greater "wow" factor that will keep so many more people watching it.
I mean, there are plenty of other contests and movies for us to watch style and smoothness. If we keep X Games as the one and only show off competition to our sport we'll be all set. Who knows, maybe there's a way to make a triple cork look stylish, we'll never know if we don't have some people progressing our sport to the maximum to show off. Not everyone has to be able to throw a triple cork to be an incredible skier though, but the general public doesn't care about that. So I say we just let X Games progress and do cool stuff in other competitions like best 3,5,7,9,1080 as stated above. Other people have said basically the same thing, but that's how I feel.

This would be rad if you mean each spin has a round of its own, would really show skiers entire bag of tricks.
Lots of people on this sight say they dont like watching dub cork after dub cork. My question is if riders like throwing them each run. This format would really make both competitors and viewers happy.(If the riders dont enjoy throwing the same tricks over again)

they could do each heat with that specific category..heat one-best trick under 900, heat 2 best switch trick, heat 3 best huge banger trick doubles, triples

Judging a style comp would not be easy. How do u compare an elias triple with a casabon zero spin?

the answer ? you cant

- Style is for moves and edits, that NS can judge and discuss as much as they please
X- games is for tech progression and for entertaining the average dude who wants to say: HOLY FUCK WAS THAT A TRIPLE CORK!!??!?!?!?!?
