American Internet Censorship Bill!!!!!

Today, Congress holds hearings on the first American Internet censorship system.
This bill can pass. If it does the Internet and free speech will never be the same.

Website Blocking
The government can order service providers to block websites for infringing links posted by any users.

Risk of Jail for Ordinary Users
It becomes a felony with a potential 5 year sentence to stream a copyrighted work that would cost more than $2,500 to license, even if you are a totally noncommercial user, e.g. singing a pop song on Facebook.

Chaos for the Internet
Thousands of sites that are legal under the DMCA would face new legal threats. People trying to keep the internet more secure wouldn't be able to rely on the integrity of the DNS system.

That means that dubstep would be illegal in the first place and won't be used in edits ever. They get alot of their samples from other songs and places on the internet. Thats why a lot are free to down load. Like pretty lights albums are free cuz he samples everything so he only makes money from products and touring. But if they make it illegal to use other peoples stuff with out paying them makes it so that dubstep and music like that will be harder to make and it will be illegal. Anyway the bill won't pass there is just no way and if it does i will protest because that shit is just stupid it really pisses me off.

This is a HUGE deal. There was an initial meeting with congress today, and essentially the only people selected to give their opinions were siding for the content industries. The lone voice at the meeting that was against the bill was Google, and they were essentially framed as "supporting the pirates" by the others. Quoting an excerpt from ARS: " This wasn't a hearing designed to elicit complex thoughts about complex issues of free speech, censorship, and online piracy; the hearing was designed to shove the legislation forward and to brand companies who object as siding with 'the pirates.' "

What a fucking joke.

Don't think for a second this can't/won't pass. A huge majority of our representatives have been bought by the content industries lobbying, and most of the ones that haven't literally don't know any better. This is with thousands of tech companies, human rights advocates, lawyers, scientists, and politicians both here and abroad speaking out against this.

If you value the internet and the fact that it is the last free, open source of information in the world, email your representative and tell them this. This fact that this bill is even being discussed shows how corrupt our government has become..

Already called my senate representative today about it.
Everyone should download Vidalia/Tor and store it on a flash drive/install it now, because post-censorship, it might be hard or impossible to download, and it will be the most practical way to go.
