Will Start 2010 Show Reel

Just finished my 2010 show reel. Since I made it so late in the year, it probably won't actually be used for anything (since I'll make an '11 reel in a couple months), so I wasn't too worried about keeping it short.

Hope you guys like it!

Critiques are welcome, as usual.

Saw this in my vimeo inbox; that was tight! One of the better reels I've seen before

I personally would've cut out some of the ski shots just for the sake of making the reel more brief and "tease-like", but that's just me. I'm sure others would disagree.

I agree. there's actually quite a bit of stuff i would cut if i were using this as a legit reel. but i just figured eh, i'll just put in whatever shots i want, and focus on making my 2011 reel much more concise.

that was awesome man. not to sound like an ass but your shots at the beginning were of much higher quality then the ski shots. the ski shots were awesome but the shots towards the beginning were incredible

I found it nice having the skiing last. Very strong opening shots, well done. The underwater stuff really surprised me.

definitely. that was partially because A. they were recorded much later in the year, B. they were filmed with the T2i instead of teh HVX/35mm adapter (aside from the first shot), and C. the aerial shots were incredibly lucky.

he will, that was super sick man! Mad props. Only thing i have to say is about the skiing. I like the skiing being in there, and i know a reel is to show you as a filmer, but i feel like you could have had some better ski shots. I dont mean angle wise or anything, but shots from more clear days. The shots were great, but the weather wasnt, which takes away from it in my opinion.

Real sick! Great work Will. I am going to agree with a few others on the ski shots and I know you have covered this, but its a critique. I feel like they almost took away from reel in a way. It might have just been the quality but I feel as though they didn't flow as well with the rest of the reel.

Overall it was killer! Keep up the great work!

thanks! i mean, if i could have filmed on clearer days i would have. trust me, i didn't choose to film on cloudy days.

No I'm saying that the shots in the first part of the reel look better than the skiing shots because most of it was shot with the T2i, which produces a much cleaner image than the HVX w/35mm adapter.

The only shots with the HVX were the very first shot, the shot at 1:36, and 2:26-3:44.

The ski shots were pretty unique to me in that it's incredibly hard to film skiing, particularly follow cams, with an HVX+35mm adapter. So I guess you could say they had sentimental value since I was proud that I managed to get some of those shots. But looking back, especially in comparison with the T2i footy, there are definitely a few skiing shots I would pull.



And Mike, here's the wedding trailer. I've never seen the full video, the filmmaker I partnered with was in charge of that:

Nah I shot that stuff when I was interning at Woodward. The guy's name was Kalon Ludvigson and he was a visiting pro for gymnastics, and Woodward wanted me to shoot a piece with him.

Great work man. Nothing to say really other than amazing. I did however think that the first minute was the best which this can be good and bad. If I had just watched the first bit I would have thought HOLY SHIT THAT WAS SICK, but I watched it all and instead thought holy shit that was sick.

may i ask what external equipment you have? Like sliders, glidecam, tripod, etc.

I used a Glidecam HD 4000 in a few shots, and I have a dolly from Glideshot Industries on a 10' PVC track. i also borrowed a slider but i can't remember what kind it was.
