are you looking to buy bindings as well? if so, you might need to rethink your budget. i tried to do a $500 budget and it did not work out. i ended up spending close to $800. the only way for you to get cheap solid skis would be from past seasons, ski swaps, and maybe in the sell/trade forum section.
if i was you i would get an all mountain ski with twin tips. basically all you have to do is research. backcountry.com is a great website and if you have any questions, you can ask by clicking 'chat now' on the top right hand corner. heres an example of an all mountain ski with twin tips:
volkl has solid skis but can be a bit pricey. as you can see above, those skis are regular $599 but are on for $419.30
also most online ski retailers have free shipping over $100 and some even have little freebies. before i got a free pair of skull candy "earmuff" headphones.
