Give me a Harsh critique (First edit with t3i and first time using FCP)

Last weekend I shot a rail jam. It was pretty much my first project with both the t3i and FCP7. I was using the kit lens the whole time. I got the tamron 17-50 yesterday which im stoked on. I had tons of trouble keeping the colors constant, but did my best. I need everyone to give me they're harshest critique on this edit. Absolutely anything that should be better next time, tell me. +K for everyone!

vimeo is making the audio out of sync with my shots. i dont know why. i do have mixed frame rates in there, but i dont think that should be the problem. i edited in pro res LT and then put into h.264 before i uploaded to vimeo, help? also why wont this play in 720?

You really should disregard youtube, real film makers use vimeo for a reason.

no. the average person wont notice it, but the music isnt in sync with the clips. somewhere it got fucked up uploading to vimeo, like the music is about .5 a second ahead of where it should be.

This problem would only happen if it was fucked up on your computer, uploading to vimeo shouldn't cause this problem.

other people have had the same problem. its not my computer, because i tried it out on my other laptop also. could it be because i have mixed frame rates ? everything is just about .5 a second late. like for example, in the 8th clip with the snowboarder in the yellow helmet, he is soposed to land right in sync with the beat.

Alright, well i dunno what to tell you, ive never had this problem before. I think deleting the video you have now and re-uploading would be a good first step. I dont want to critique something that isn't ready to be critiqued.

I thought it was pretty good.

Just what I noticed:

-Couple of the shots were overexposed.

-Get creative with the angles. (I need to work on this too)

-Thought I saw some softness, could be the lens. I dunno.

that was my thought. i edited in ProRes422 LT and put into h.264 before i uploaded to vimeo. I dont have vimeo plus, could that be why? i have no idea.


and thanks man for the pointers, the lens is a little soft, its the kit lens.

not bad. cant get too creative with two features to hit and film.

a few things noticed

-colors off/exposure off a bit. some of that can be easily fixed in final cut. learn the 3 way color corrector.
-angles were fine, some better variance but really couldn't do much with the lack of features/area
-seemed like a few of your tripod shots started in the middle, causing it to be jarring because of the jerky start
-if you exported in h264 with high/best settings you should be fine. 150mb seems normal to me for a 2 min video, you don't need plus unless you upload more than 500mb a week

i think this is probably the last reason I have plus, and isn't 1gb?

I like vimeo plus because:

-you have unlimited hd uploads(one a week can work but if you're uploading cuts to review with other people, it gets annoying)

-HD embedding, it makes a huge difference IMO

-being skipped to the front of the conversion line and having your video encoded at a higher bit rate for better quality

-being able to replace videos, if you have a small mess up, no big, reupload a new file, same link etc.

-limiting embed, this is great if you want people to come to your website to view your video, which alot of people want.

-the advanced statistics, you can see where in the world your video is view, where it has been embedded and tons of other wild stats.

-then id said the 5gb upload limit and up to a 5gb file size comes last, these dont mean much to me

overall, vimeo plus is so worth it. plus i dont mind giving a little money to the best video uploading site on the internet.

thanks for all of the help guys. i will probably purchase vimeo plus pretty soon before the season. one question, when i export in h.264, i transcoded it through MPEG Streamclip. Was i soposed to do it right through FCP? because i dont know why the resolution looks like shit, plus the sound being out of sync.

the clarity of your shots was good and i dig the song.

how bout a little context though in the titles...where was this? what was it for? who won possibly? overall a lot better than my first edit with my 7d

Honestly, I thought it was pretty good. As another guy said, more creative shots... it would have been cool to see more of a close up shot on the skis/boots. I didn't really notice the audio problem, but my speakers are on a low volume right now... I thought the song choice was good though... It would have been cool to see you do some rack focus shots or shots with a good depth of field... otherwise, well done, you could've improved the color range and contrast with the 3 way color corrector in FCP, but generally well done. props for the first edit with both the camera and FCP, probably better than what I would've done. stoked to get my t3i soon...

yeah man, the t3i is pretty damn awesome. thanks for the tips. the music wasnt at all like bad, it was just a tiny bit out of sync with a few of the shots. the average person wouldnt notice at all.


just a general question for anyone. ive asked it before but gotten no reply's. when you transcode back to h.264, do you do it through FCP when you export? or do it through MPEG streamclip converter. because thats what i was using and that could be the reason the resolution isnt great and the music out of sync.

I would either do it through fcp or quicktime pro. I do a full quality export out of fcp then compress with quicktime pro. But, i have exported straight from fcp for web and it works well.

actually, i export my files from FCP using the Export as Quicktime tool, then I use the freeware application HandBrake - http://handbrake.fr/ - to compress my video files, which actually converts them to an MP4 file, which I end up uploading to vimeo... I've never had a problem with HandBrake, and it's REALLY useful for a lot of things (ripping DVDs, compressing video files with target file size options)... I'd definitely go for that - Export from FCP with the Export as Quicktime, then import it into HandBrake, compress the video and make it an MP4 file, then upload...

I usually export full quality prores 422 out of final cut then compress to h.264 you can do this directly in final cut by going to export -> using quick time conversion. then, follow the guild lines here http://vimeo.com/help/compression

video wasn't bad for your first edit, just a little over-exposure and pretty much what everyone else says.

as far as the vimeo specs and converting and what not, if you have final cut pro you should have compressor? when i export i go straight from prores422 and just go to >file>export or cmd+E and it should export the video in its uncompressed full quality form. this should be a big file. then you can bring it in to compressor and it should already have web preset specs in the program. abe k explains it pretty easily and this works for all footage for the most part - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5TtXN5iKyH0&feature=channel_video_title

and as far as vimeo plus goes, i just have the regular version and i have never had quality problems at all. i would recommend to learn to get the most quality out of your videos before upgrading right off the bat. then once you have your workflow fine tuned and you can crank out high quality videos like they're goin out of style, then upgrade if you feel it necessary. the quality difference is hardly noticeable between regular and plus if you know what your doing

definitely get creative with the angles, you had a lot of the same angles. there's no need to be harsh haha, it constructive criticism that you want

it would be even better to see shots for all over, close up, far out, from above, from below, just mix it up

definitely not bad tho
