This is such a shock, I really respected JP and all that he has done for the sport in his career. A sad day for skiing indeed.

i'm an east coast skier who is heading out to salt lake in late January.  I'm not too experienced with skiing out west, but I did go to Alta last year and plan to go again this year.  I don't know ANYTHING about avalanche awareness and if/what gear I may need.  Can someone help me out please???

Two memories: 1st: Jamie called and said, "I need a Big Road Gap with an orange jeep for a cover on SKI mag, do you know of one?" I did, a macker that had never been hit in Southern Oregon. 48 hours later, he was launching over an orange Jeep for a cover shot. 2nd: Engleburg Switzerland, he put down a 100ft. to his feet. I'll put that on my mom. That night, we looked at the photo/video and went to the bars stoked! Damn Jamie. Bummin. Can't wait to meet your kids. I tell stories like this and more when the time is right. Damn.

Terrible loss. Reminds people how dangerous early season conditions can be. There were around a dozen human triggered avalanches in LCC yesterday.

Not sure if he was or not but my understanding is that he was forced into a tree or rock by the momentum of the avalanche, not sure it would have mattered with that kind of power.  Either way he certainly should have been.

Exactly. All the gear in the world wouldn't have saved him - it was just not a good place to be on that particular day. Report says 12 skier-triggered slides yesterday... just nuts.

Our sport is dangerous, we all have so much fun and have progressed to where we are very confident and forget how much danger we put ourselves in every time we go out. Complacency can lead to tragedy's like this one.

Such an amazing skier...it's always sad to lose such an influential person in the industry...really makes you realize that no matter what precautions are taken, risks are risks...all in all, very sad. RIP Jamie.

wow one of the first guys I was truly inspired by. I remember before I had heard of NS or anything watching the record cliff Huck on the warren miller movie and I was on love and wanted to hit cliffs just as big. The guy was a hero, rip and sip
