Alright, so I am riding on some 2010 Salomon SPK Kaos boots. Last year, when they were new, they were very comfortable. Today, I went skiing for the first time of the season, and I started to get a lot of toe bang towards the end of the day. Any tips on how I can fix/prevent this?
a lot of the time you get toe bang because your boots are too big. could they have packed out? it also could be from your foot growing and them being too small
Do you have a footbed in your liners? If not, then this is an absolute must. Feet are flexible and without the proper support, your arches will collapse and your foot can expand to almost an entire size in length.
A footbed holds your flexible foot up, not allowing it to collapse and also locking it in the rear of the boot. Get some nice footbeds and your problem will be greatly reduced if not fully solved.
Cut your toenails as close as you can, it might help. Footbeds will help too, they'll give you a more consistent fit because the problem could be from your liner packing out.
Aftermarket arch support from companies like Aline, Sidas, Superfeet, Boot Doc, etc... They replace the standard insole that comes in a boot at the time of purchase.
Yeah, I just put some comformables in my boots. Literally a world of difference. I cant believe I've been skiing without them for so long. You can get a cheap pair of footbeds for ~$35, and it's worth every penny.
I went to walmart and bought a 5$ yoga matt. Then I took a footbed that fit my shoe and traced it onto the matt and cut it out with a razorblade. then used that as my footbed. It is the most comfortable thing ever + it is also a shock absorber.
Just like a boot, the best one is the one that works for your foot. I have had great success with Aline (most of our team like Jossi & Benchetler are on them), but visit a few shops and see what works best for your foot type.
I would not suggest using soft, gel type insoles since they allow MORE expansion of your foot to happen and usually create more problems than they solve. A well structured footbed actually does a better job at shock absorption since it allows the natural arches in your foot to function properly like the natural shock absorber that they are.
at first I used only one layer between the bottom of my liner and the plastic shell of the boot, and that worked really well. This year I think my feet shrank, I didnt think it was possible.. but it happend. so I added a second layer inside the liner as a footbed. now my feet are snug and so comfy.
if you get boots that fit properly your feet won't be moving around in your boots giving you toe bang or shin bang. and when you buy boots in the store and they feel perfectly comfortable they are going to pack out and be too big
Yeah, I got free used boots from my friend, they fitted like shit. and I just went to walmart and bought some of those liners you cut yourself. And it made it sooo much more comfy and fit wayy better.
ok there are two possibilities here. 1. if it is intense toe bang that you can really not stand than your feet probably grew and you need new boots. 2. your feet over the off-season expand from not being packed into a boot frequently like you do during ski season. wearing flip flops and sneakers will allow this to happen. it may be that your feet just expanded a little during the offseason and since its the first day back it might be a bit uncomfortable. hope you get everything figured out man.
