Can you eat zebra mussels?

Just wondering I know there a serious invasive species but any good recipes for them? I love regular mussels figure these are probably bomb afraid to eat them thougb

from what i know, they are edible, but as with most molluscs in general, you must make sure theyre grown in a contaminant free environment !
toxins in the water can be stored in their body for their entire life ....

and i'm not sure how much meat there is on those babies, but usually wild molluscs don't have much meat on them ...

Yea on lake george one summer i found some pretty giant muscles in the sand probably werent zebra muscles but there must be some good recipes for freshwater muscles. Being a fish monger, I eat normal muscles all the time but we had an argument at work about fresh water muscles today. I would imagine you could do something half decent with a few species of the freshwater ones

you can but you gotta make sure they are clean, which they usually arent if they are coming from a lake with much human interaction.

for reference, molluscs like that are filter feeders and they do exactly what you'd expect a filter to do, they filter all the crap out of the water and store it in their tissues like a sponge, so seriously, make damn sure the water they come from is clean !

...and besides being full of shit, zebra mussels are tiny. Even the biggest ones are like1.5-2in long.

the amount of shelling required to get a decent amount of food from those things would be retarded. theyre probably too small to make it worthwhile.

In segregated pools, or water with heralded quality. Mussels can be like wine, with specific locations having a distinct taste even if they are the same species. Its not like they pluck them out of a ditch or get them wherever they can find them, they are bred in a healthy environment (most of the time).

nah for the most part they just farm them wherever they can in the ocean. dunno about freshwater ones though. But the farmed ones eat the exact same shit as wild. same water

zebra and quagga mussles are not a good thing to have in your lake.  They fuck up boat and jetski motors when they clog the intake.  They are filter feeders so they eat all the stuff in the water that fish eat which cause the to fish die off.  They are sharp and can cut a foot open.  Its strongly advised you dont eat them. They accumulate contaminants as they feed, and in areas of high contaminant concentrations, zebra mussels can accumulate enough pollutants to raise concerns for human consumption. Possible effects from ingesting include giardia and ecoli. They are an invasive species not native to North America and have already casued the closure of several public waterways and lakes in many states.  I work fisheries at my state park so i got all learned up on the subject

have you ever seen a zebra mussel? theyre tiny as fuck. ive never seen one bigger than like a small pebble and trying to open them would suck especially since you'd get no meat
