It depends on what you want.
Most people will recommend the Canon 600D (or Rebel T3i whatever it's called in the U.S.A.)
If you want a full feature DSLR that encompasses all that would be required to take you from rank novice to serious enthusiast without breaking a sweat get the 600D. You won't have to worry about changing camera body for a while and can explore the movie making as well quite easily.
If you require a more robust body and better camera handling. The top LCD is really a must and the better focusing will make a long shoot far smoother. Oh and: HIGHER BURST RATE!
If you go for the 600D you will have more budget for lenses.
Get the 600D with a kit zoom lens, lenses won't get cheaper and they are decent enough to begin with.
With the rest of the money invest in a 50mm prime.
