STH 16 vs STH 16 steel?

Hey NS! i just bought some new JJs and i got STH 16 bindings on with them when i bought them, now im wondering if i should upgrade to the STH16 steel bindings or not.

First im wondering if its the same mounting point with both bindings? (im guessing it would be but id rather be sure about it)

also does the STH 16 steel differ so much from the normal STH ?

Just wondering mainly because i think a steel binding would prove to las longer in the long run but havent got any actual experience with the binding.

Well i never ski or owned the steel, but the sth16 is a bomber bindin. Your ski will be dead before the binding. My tought would be that the steel will be heavier, more durable, might worht the extra $ but not for me. Good luck.

The steel is the same hole pattern so no worries there.

They are 400 grams heavier for the pair so a bit but not too bad.

Really no you dont need them. The only salomon athletes currently using them are Cody and Seth. All the rest use the standard 16. So really if you can honestly say you ride as hard as cody or seth, then yes you may need them, if not you will be fine with what you have.

However if you really want them get them they will last forever. Im getting a set for my old rocker 2's, I dont need them, I just want them.

I have a pair of STH Steel 16's if anyone wants a pair. Perfect condition - just missing some paint on the toes/heels.

i have never heard any bad things about the sth 16s, so, i doubt you need the steel ones, especially if you dont ski insanely hard or are heavy

How much do you weigh? How hard do you charge? You should be fine without the Steels. I've been using a pair of STH 16: for the past 4 seasons, and they're still going strong, unlike the skis that they've been on

For point of clarification - I will not discount these bindings 70% because they paint is scratched.

Californiagrown seems to think $175 is a fair price.

The STH 16 steel is actually just a re-painted/named version of the 916 (s916/916-lab and all the other 916-version names it has had), old race binding from Salomon. Solid steel in most of the binding.

Before the STH16 came out I used to ski the 916/920, the sth has pretty much the same construction except all the solid steel (which is overkill for 97% of the worlds skiers) but when they released the sth version I never looked back.

If you break STH16's every now and then (not skistoppers, breaking as in blowing the binding) the steel is a great binging. Or if you just feel like having a really heavy binding (oh, the retention is slightly better/heavier on the steel version).


Short version: STH16 STEEL is same binding as former race-binding 916 with new paint and name, break your STH's for breakfast? Get Steel's

Thanks a ton for all the replys! +k to everyone.  Only reason i am realy thinking i should have steels is that they will last me such a long time. Now im starting to worry about the weight of the steels tho. Dont think ill need the steels but i probably want them anyways. Thanks again for the help!

I don't think you should worry about how long te STH 16s will last. I've destroyed skis, snapped and taken all the life from all the skid my single pair of STHs have been on. And they're still holding strong.

I got a pair of the sth 16's when they first came out and I'm still using them so like 5 seasons, and have no signs of sling . If you already have the sth 16's just ski them.

Has it been 5 seasons? I guess last season would have been season 4. So that makes sense.

Original model's still going strong!

Other than some plastic in the toe, the only other difference between the STH16 and STH16 STEEL/916/920/900 is the wing adjustments.  THe STH has a single wing adjustment screw, and the STEEL/916 has dual wings adjustment screws.

I use and trust them both.
